Is there anything special about tires that are "pinned for studs"? Can I just drill holes that are the correct size?

Time to get winter tires, and I'd like to have more options and still be able to run studs.

An OLD source told me (this is my old man, he's 87) that the GOOD ones actually have threads molded into the rubber. The cheapos have barbs on the studs and they push in. He says that the cheapos tend to pop out, but never all at once. You can then occasionally add them as needed.

He's not sure if you can get the good ones anymore. HTH.
