: Common ness of Sector shaft failure in TJ's?
William 10-15-2001, 11:29 AM How many people have had the sector shaft on thier TJ's go bad?
Also, if you can, let me know how much lift and weather you're running stock drag link and tierod.
Monkeyboy 10-15-2001, 11:44 AM I know Nasvik toasted his.
William 10-15-2001, 11:50 AM Any story to it that you can relay?
I know he's running about 6" of lift... I know he was running an aftermarket tie rod, not sure about his draglink. I doubt you'll hear from him any time soon on this board though, he's on vacation
I just noticed today that my steering box is leaking. I have about 7" lift and 36s. Factory style steering set up. Decisions, decisons

I've rebuilt the factory steering gear with new seals once ... never again. Less than 2 years later and mine's leaking again.

nasvik 10-29-2001, 01:32 PM Hey - just got back from Europe. Sorry for the delay.
I haven't had much of a problem with the shaft, but I have had problems with the seals. Big tires, lockers and hard wheeling puts too much side load on them and they leak. The shaft is a bit 'corroded' where the seal sits, but I don't think that's the problem.
Research tells me that the TJ box is a bit different from older Jeeps in that the seals and bearing are higher in the box. In other words, the exposed shaft is a longer lever arm and can harm the seal. I don't know for sure if that's true. If you'd like to swap in an older box, I've heard believe a mid '80's Ford Van that uses the 808 box with metric o-ring fittings will swap right in...
As for AGR? I've heard/read as many success stories as failures. I don't see the point in spending money with them.

Hey Paul mine is leaking out of the cap on top held on by the four small bolts with the adjustor(?) in the middle. Do you think it is just a seal?
nasvik 10-30-2001, 09:44 AM TJoop -
After I replaced the lower seal in my box I had that exact problem, and it wouldn't stay tight. There's no seal there, but the bolts have to be tight. Best best might be to pull the box and drain it. Clean out those bolt holes well and then use a strong Loktite to hold. Cut washers didn't work for me, but serrated might.
I'm not a steering box expert, BTW - just had a couple leaks.
