I ran a search but didnt come up with anything. Is anybody running rear steering on there rigs? Like a d60 and hydraulic rear steer setup? I was thinking about going this route for my next project, I've got most of it figured out, well atleast how I could do it. I just wanted to see some pics and ask some questions to the rear steer guys... thanks!

I was just wondering if I have to use a front axle or if a rear D60 would work? Just add knuckles ears on the ends I believe is what there called? As im sure you know in So.Cal front 60 are rare as it gets, and if you do find one they want 1,500 for a take out. I find rear 60's all day for a good price though...

Ideally I want to find a front Ford 60, have the short side lengthened and the long side shortened so that diff is centered. Then just have some shafts made for it, throw on my hydraulic stuff and walla.

Also I was hoping to see some pics just to see how other people did it. Thanks for any help.

So basically Ant, build it from scratch. Or take a rear and fit knuckles from a front to it, right?

...Ok, so, do you have to do anything to a front axle to run it in the rear? Since both driveshafts rotate the same way (unless I'm stupid, which is possible :D), by just turning a front axle around and running it off the rear d/s, it should rotate the same way as the front does... I guess the only downfall would be running on the coast side of the gears...??

If that's the case, why would you possibly want to convert a rear axle into a front? Isn't that kind of like making a sandwich by taking another sandwich apart? Why not just eat the first one and be done with it?

Because front 60's are harder to find. Rear 60's are a dime a dozen and can be found at just about any freakin junkyard for a cheap price.... My initial plan is to find a front Ford 60 and work it from there but the only ones I ever find the places want 1200- 1500 for some take out.
This project is on a budget and I want to do this as cheap as I can...

NO!, I was pointing out how expensive it is to piece one together, a whole D60 front is half the price of trying to build one!

I know it would be easier to just slap a front under the rear, but don't you need to center the diff?

If this is a budget rig, then forget about rear steer. Its way too expensive. :nuke:

I would wait, enless you have a very light rig and little horse power, or baby the rig the rear steer will fail . Especially the Unimog compnents. :jeep:

Are you speaking from experience? If so, what have you seen fail, why, and could it have been prevented?

Hey bruiser, why does it have to be on a light rig that you baby? I figured full hydro steering(for the rear) would hold up just fine because it's just 2 cylinders holding it together right and you don't even use it alot so there is less wear
