Alright all you Cali smog experts i've got a question for ya. I'm about to pick up a 98 chevy vortec 4.3 V6 that originally came on a 2wd 5spd pickup. i'm plannin on putting this in my amigo in front of a 4spd automatic and a 4wd transfer case. Now i know the computor wont care about it but am i gonna get shot down by the smog ref? is there any way for me to get it thru with the auto or am i gonna have to pick up a stick and throw it on for a month to get it approved then put on my auto? thanks.

You will need every thing from the truck, including all the warning lights. Also,

Inorder to make the swap legal I belive you need 7 years or 70k on your amigo.. I could be wrong on this one..

the age and mileage shouldn't be an issue since its 12 years old with 150k miles on it. oh and did i mention this will be its fourth motor, tho the first non stock one.

Dallas - The important question (for the Smog guys) is if the '98 Votec had the option for a 4 speed auto. If not, you'll have to put in something that it came with from the factory in the same class of vehicle.

In 98 that motor came with a 4L60E in the S-series Blazer i think. i know it came with a 4spd auto in the full size truck and the S-series tho i'm not positive on exactly which one. i'm pretty sure it came with the 4L60E. i'm planning on putting on a 700R4 which is essentially the same as the 4l60E but without electronic control.

My understanding is you'll need to keep the electric control. I think.

what about just throwin on a stick for the test then swapping. think that would just be easier? especially since it was originally 2wd and i'm not gonna be usin a GM t-case.

alright hate to resurrect a reallllly dead thread but since my rig is now cali legal I thought I'd share what I did so maybe it can help others. I ended up running the 98 vortec 4.3 and had the computer reprogrammed by the guys at speed scene wiring. I told them I'd be running the 700R4 (no electronic controls) but needed it to smog. They programmed the ECU with the program for a manual tranny truck, and simply added the TC lockup relay into the harness. Basically this allows the engine to run without a CE light, and the tranny can do its own thing as well. The smog referee didn't even raise an eyebrow at the setup and the only reason I didn't pass the first time is cause the cat was bad and it failed the actual emissions test, it passed on visual and ECU scan. Since then its been smogged twice and passed easily each time.
