IF you can find a used front 60 here, it will cost your first born and an all night date with the wife (plus some cash!). I said to myself "newbie" :flipoff2: do the right thing and "search the POR board and find out what the hell it will cost ya to build one from scratch. No results from the search so I pose the question?
If I buy a housing with tubes can I build a front 60 for substantially less than a dynatrac, sunray or WMS will do it for. Can someone give me a breakdown on the parts and prices?
 in advance

You can find them sometimes. But then you have to pay $1500 to get one. I'll be damned if I am gonna pay that! I want to find out a ball park $ as to what it would cost to do with either new or easily found used parts.

If you are hooked up you can get a new tera 60 center for $700
Tube is about $10/ foot for a total of $60
inner and outer knuckles you gotta find used or buy new from Redline or dynatrack lets say you find used for $350 (good luck)
Cheapest way to get spindles hubs and bearings is to go with the newer unitbearing design gotta have those knuckles and it costs $300/side =$600
If you use stock length axle shafts and are somewhat connected you can get shafts with u joints for 180/side = $360
Lockout hubs run about $140
used 35 spline open carier with used bearings and gears $10
These are unrealisticaly good deals and the total is already over $2000 for a stockish open diffed equal to what you can buy used setup. I am sure I forgot some stuff but I put down enough to point out that it is not practical.

I hate to say it but, it is cheaper to buy the whole truck if you can find someone with a truck that has a bad motor or a real hammered piece of crud The problem is getting rid of the rest of the truck.. scrap steel is at an all time low price of 14 dollars a ton.

look in the papers. I found a dodge dana 60 with a 241 transfer with wheels and tires (stock ones) for $800. it was complete and looked pretty good. I would have bought it if I had the $$$. they seem to pop up. A friend of a friend of mine (I think he comes on this board every so often) picked up a pair of m1009 chev axles with 20k miles on them, 4.56 gears, and a rear detroit for $1000.By the time he put in the front detroit, d70 outers, and 5.13 gears, with a complete rebuild on both axles, he was $2500 into it. Not too bad if you ask me.. for axles that are basically NEW... Just keep your eyes open.. oh, and wrecking yards always want about 33% more than it is worth, just because it is convient for you (unless you can bater with them, or know someone in the yard, which I dont). Like I said, keep your eyes open, keep going through the classifieds every couple of days (including those car papers infront of the super markets... those have the best deals).. and you will bump into a good deal.. Hope I helped. Garrett

I forgot about all the brake component prices too, that is a bunch of money. yeah buying the whole truck is the cheapest thing to do, contact some insurance companies too you may be able to buy salvaged vehicles from some of them still.

its a lot less of a headache to stock up on D44 axles and save your penny's then just bend over and take it from Dynatrac

If you got your "wallet" set on it. Look on www.ebay.com for "dana 60" and you will find parts......You better know your "stuff" or you'll buy useless parts......:D

I have seen a total of 2 60's in classifieds in the last 3 months. I check them everyday. Both were gone by the time I called!
Some day I'll get lucky!
Thanks
