Retained my rear springs last weekend, using Sam's (strange rover) advise.

Sorry for the lack of pics, but the welds are temporary and real ugly, so I don't want to go through the abuse.

Materials:

1.5x3 box tube. I used 12 gauge.

cut the tube into 1 to 1.5 inch cross-sections

Cut those pieces twice to form two "J"s, with the smallest lip about 1".

Place the small (or bottom of the J) through the spring, and well the long part to the outer most part of the spring perch (outside).

What's cool is that upon full stretch (remember that I use super stiff, super short rear springs) the j bends a little, but on compression, the spring puts the retainer back straight.

took 25 minutes from cuts to welds...........

Can't weld so wouldn't be able to tell a good weld from a bad:D and I don't have a red star so I can't post it just to watch you squirm....

if those parts are bending, you should fix them, Even if they bend out and then get bent back in again, it will eventually fail. Here is a pic of the easiest way to do it, and its is brutally strong with the right material.

i agree- i see absolutely no need for the expedition exchange style retainers. while nice, they are ridiculously overbuilt and cost way too much. i am all for overbuilt, but not when it is also overpriced.

I couldn't agree more. However, I can't use that style unless I remove my cones, which I didn't feel like doing yet. I kinda like the idea of leaving the cone in there with that big arse shock in the back in case the (any) retainer lets go.

Build the retainers I showed you out of 1/4" or 3/8" by 1 1/4" and you will never have a retainer let go. I regularly my springs almost 6" and i have not had a single retainer failure. I have been running a similar set since Doug M proved to me why cones are a bad thing, i never really liked them, but that was my only option so i thought. Alot of people dont make them right, that is why they tend to fail. Get rid of those damn cones, you should be banned from the pirate board untill you remove those from your truck!!:D :D :D :D

THEY'RE TEMPORY IN 12 GAUGE UNTIL I REMOVE THE CONES!

I would STONGLY suggest .25 inch for this if I didn't have cones and 1.5 inch wide.
