I've got the Pitman arm under control - Thanks to all involved ;)
Now my next problem is...... the 55 box has 2 U joints to get to the steering column. This setup is about 4 inches too long for the 40. What is the best way around this problem? A custom U joint? Any advice appreciated.

by the way my 40 has a 2 inch body lift

the 55 box IS a 40 box with a different pitman arm. If you are going to use the 55 column, you may be able to find a hilux intermediate shaft with the flex plate and end you will need to make the hook up. All the Toyota's use 30 spline fittings in the steering columns-you will need to hunt.

Normally, the 40 series rubber flex plate (from manual box) is used again on the PS box or replacement. If not power steering, the original 40 column will work. If you put a PS box in, the column is about 40-50 mm too long and can be cut down, rewelded, and smoothed out in a lathe.

shoulds just done teh 60 series power steering!

what exactly is the drama, too, i dont really get it? does the box bolt to the same plate on the chassis?

i use a longer arm, from, a different vehicle, but if its the column (steering wheel, to firewall) can't you just cut teh firewall and lower the whole column a bit?

otherwise, i dunno what your talking about!!

the 55 box has a different pitman arm than a 40 series, therefore it must be changed when installing it on a 40 series.

same bolting 55 and 40, non issue

The one piece (and really the 2 piece 1981+) are too long so you can cut the firewall. You could shim the steering column toward the driver 1" (25mm) from the inside.

And for some trucks I agree with the 60 steering. Concealed behind bib, clean install, and not really anymore difficult than a saginaw (except sourcing a steering box on this side of the pond....cheap. Any 1971 or earlier I would go that way or saginaw. Later is a toss up unless true rock crawler then a must (see tire size vs factory system thread)
