Does anybody have any tips or tricks for removing a very tight fuel filter canister on a Cummins? My dad's will not come off with lots of force and a good strap wrench. A friend told me his was pretty difficult to remove once, but didn't require an overly large amount of force. I've tried opening the water drain valve to break any pressure inside (if any) already. I also tried to find something at TDR, but you have to join to search. I'm liking my Powerstroke fuel filter arrangement much better.:flipoff2:

go buy a oil felter remover that you can conect a ratchet to and some extentions. thats how i get mine off. or go ask to borrow one from your local lube place.

Join. TDR is **WELL** worth the money.
In the meantime, I searched a bit for you (didn't know the year of you truck, so I nabbed a few of each):

I just did my fuel filter on my '93 cummins and yes it's a pain in the butt. The best tool for the job I have found is this:

When you remove the filter do not forget the little rubber o ring that goes around the threaded center as it's easy to miss.

What year is his truck? Are you sure its a screw on filter? My '97 has a paper cartridge filter that goes inside the canister, IIRC, you remove a bolt from the top, and it pulls straight off. I know they changed the filter arangement a few times over the years.

I realized in the middle of the night that I left the year off. I hate it when people do that.
Randii I'd join if I had a Cummins. It's my dad's so I don't have much use. Thanks for searching for me. I do appreciate the help.
LCexplorer I have those pliers and tried them. I was distorting the canister with them trying to get it to turn. It's not my rig, so I didn't want to mess it up.
Pete it is a '97. Thanks for the info on unscrewing the bolt. I wondered if that was the case, but other Cummins owners I know told me the canister unscrewed.
Thanks for the info fellas.
