Has anyone had this problem ?

I had a noise low in the engine up front.
I pulled the motor out to take a look ( thinking the bearings may be worn) and found the crank pulley flopping around. The keyway was all messed up so the crank needs to be replaced.
Is this common ?

You should have 4 bolts tightly holding the pulley on too. If those were off, you got lucky the pulley stayed on at all.

Even with the keyway messed up though, the bolts should have held it snug.

those 4 bolts hold the pulley to the drive gear(cam belt) not the crank.without seeing the crank it impossible to really acess what is going on........pics might (proably not ) help...luck:D

yes this is way too common..we see them more often than we like too....

sorry Glenn, but the four small bolts only hold the lower belt drive pulley to the crank timing belt gear....only the gear has one large bolt and the key....I know the FSM says to torque it to 52 lbs....but I like to go a little more....

the trouble is when most guys try to change the front seal..they don't get the single large bolt tight enough, because it's hard to do by yourself. You need help sometimes to hold the crank while you try to torque that bolt.

It don't have to cost you a new motor though or crank..most good machine shops can fix it for under $50 bucks....but you have to take it out...DOH....hehe

Don't run it too long like that..or it will do too much damage to the end of the crank....

The crank is screwed, I have a second one but I think a new engine is in order. "It's only money"
