hey guys I'm looking at buying a 79 f250 for the axles to put in my EB, but since it's out of state I want the current owner to be able to Identify if it's a 44 or a 60 in it. it has a 400 and a 435 in it, would that make it a 60? do the 3/4 ton 44's have ball joints in their knuckles, or do they have kingpins like the 60's?
thanks for the help, since my other 60 turned out to be closed knuckle...

A 79 F250 should be an open knuckle 44, either way, the pumpkin should be stamped with a 44, or a 60 somewhere at the corners, that will tell you for sure..

A few F-250's had the D60 in the front. I think it came with the snow plow package.

thanks for the help, the truck I was looking at online has the 44 in it, can't seem to find 350's in the western US for sale cheap...

Next time have the owner of the truck give you the bill of materials #. Its stamped on front side of long tube. The # you want is 610023-2,3,4,6,8. I think you can also tell by GVW. I think its 8500 and above that have the 60.

If it has balljoints it's a 44....Kingpins it's a D60

Not to argue but my d44 has kingpins, but it is a1972. The only easy way I know is to check the casting #.

The quickest way is look at the hubs. If it has external its a big hub 44 pre-77, small internal 44, large internal 60.

if it is open knuckle and has king pins and disc brakes it is a reverse dana 60 78 and 79 f250 and f350 mostly in supercabs or with the snow fighter option. The hub way is also a good way to identify.

It's not open knuckle is it?? I've never seen and open knuckle 44 with kingpins...Bronco D30's use kingpins though

I have an open knuckle 44 with king pins laying at my house. They are out there, not sure if anyone wants one. It also has 3.73 rr gears. will post pics if I didn't cut and scrap it.

so what did these come in?

You say it is RC so it must have been a Ford....All the open Knuckle 44's I have seen have been balljoint

Did check the VIN but best guess was around 70 F-100. Only got because it was free and I never saw 3.73 RC gears before, and for the weld on c bushings. I didn't even notice the open knuckle king pin till my friend pointed out.

That's weird....I have a D44 front from a 70 and 72 F100...both are identical, RC, Drum breaks, open Knuckle, 260X u-joints and balljoints

I fawked up the last post. I ment to say that I did not check the VIN. I'll look at the tag # to see what it is.
