Everyone's seen the new electric Detroit locker, I believe Eaton's design may be a better mousetrap.
It's going to be OEM on the Hummer H1, new H2, and the hush, hush, whisper, whisper small H3 (to compete with JEEP).
No shift forks or separate electric solenoids or motors to engage.
The black ring on the right(ring gear) side is a strong electromagnet that actuates the locking mechanism.
Available for GM diffs (Hummer and 10.7) and Ford 8.8 this spring (Big OEM stuff first), then Dana stuff in the summer/fall.
This is a cutaway unit.
Disengaged (look in the left side spider gear)....

Engaged (4 large 1/2" dia. pins lock in the side of the spider gear)..........

Looks like a really clean design. Isn't that what Eaton has been putting in truck (big truck, ie tractor) rears for some time now? I know all of our log trucks have selectable lockers in 'em and they hold up just fine. Just wondering if it's the same locker just scaled down.

Peabody----I believe it is, if it will hold up to an 8500 lb. Hummer w/ 37" tires, it should be tough.

 I saw this stuff about a year ago... also check out Auburn Gear's upcoming design, the ECTED. However this unit looks like it will have the most success in the market.

That's funny, the SEMA rep and Booth stated that this (last week) was the first public showing of the new locker.
Maybe they lied.
Any links on the Auburn stuff?

***** Pefect timing. Thats when i plan on pulling out my lock right for something beefier. I assume it will be a FULL LOCKER (ie spool) when it it locked, like the ARB?
Does EATON have a website so i can follow up on the info as it is released??
Thanks

The electromag sure will attract a lot of metal. How will that affect it??

Change your oil more often and it shouldn't be a problem. Unless there is a real problem w/ the gears, you should only have a small amount of very small shavings in the diff.
I change the oil in my diffs after every ride due to water contamination.

Also, dont most dif's have a magnet on the bottom to attract the shavings already? The electromag would have to pull the shavings away from that magnet.

There are magnetized plugs which attract shavings and keep them outta the way, but my question here is that the electro mag is part of a mechanism, and would an accumulation of shavings affect the function of the mechanism. I'm not saying it will...just a question.

There ya go hellbender...
I also called Auburn a few months ago and talked to a rep about when the aftermarket lockers will come out. He said they are concentrating on the OEM marked first. I argued with him that they should have brought it into the aftermarket first where it would have been met with more open arms than the limited OEM market.. hopefully we will see it soon.
