this is the deal...

i am going to a 4 year collage this fall. my jeep is looking more and more impractical every day. it is sporting 39.5's dana 60 front, 14 bolt rear, AMC 360 with 5k on it, 727, dana 300, locked rear....stuff. i cant go wheeling everyday anymore because it is too big to drive to the trail head. i dont have a truck to tow it with or a trailer. that is the reality.

i need a DD that i can go to collage with. i am thinking about selling my CJ :( but getting a newer cherokee with and putting like 35's or 33's to drive and have a little fun with.

what do you think i should do...?

You won't be happy if you sell it. Get a job and work for that gas money!! I drive mine daily on 42's. Fairly small college town, so I don't ever have to go that far.

also i can get all the toys i want AFTER collage. its not like i cant wheel the cherokee. the one i want is 33's with arbs front and rear with 33's and disk 8.8 rear...not too bad.

Get a Toyota pickup. They're cheap, easy to find, super-reliable, inexpensive to insure, easy to work on, and cheap at the gas pump. They're very wheelable yet still great as a DD.

Jeeps are cool for wheeling but are horribly unreliable and poorly engineered (GOD I hope Roxy doesn't read this or I'm gonna get it!!:flipoff2: ). They really suck as a DD. A Jeep on a college campus is a rolling invitation for a thief too.

Buy a 'Yota!!!!!;) FWD sucks ass.

i am a jeep dude if i got a yota i would have to tuck my weiner under (mangina) to drive it, i am not willing to do that.

not lots of theft in OK.

i also have lots of jeep parts like extra motors trannys and such i could get and the 4.0 is a hell of a motor (the only good one cry-co ever made)

Get an old F-250 for a daily driver. You can get a 2wd cheap. They're easy to work on and parts are cheap. If you're smart enough to go to college then you're amart enough to figure out a way to keep it. Possibly do the 6 year plan in college. Good luck and do well in school.

Hey Chris, I'm a Toyota guy but don't take my suggestion as a dig at Jeeps. I like them myself but they have their limitations. I'm only trying to suggest a decent alternative besides driving a :barf: :barf: FWD sedan.

You'll get over the change after you pull a few stuck Jeeps out iwht your new Toyota.:flipoff2: Mangina my ass, beee-yotch!

Anyways I was kinda in the same situation as you a few years ago except I had my FJ-40.

Anyways I took the route that Hef recommended and got my 85 pick up. I love it now and since I'm back to being a starving college student with no money I'm thinking of selling my FJ to fund my Truck. Anyways get over your brand loyality and get a Yota :flipoff2:

IMO, I think you'd regret selling it, so don't part with it. Just park it, and bide you time at college. That's what I did. And when I came back, it was there waitning for me.

I was hoping you'd say OSU, so I can warn you....

THERE ARE ALREADY APPROXIMATELY 500 MILDLY LIFTED CHEROKEES ON CAMPUS. We are full. Don't bring any more :flipoff2: Seriously though, they seem to be EVERYWHERE up here. I think the Cherokee to student ratio is like 1:1 in Stillwater

Fill me in with some info here....do you know where you plan to live yet? On campus, off, commute...? If you're not going to make a lot of trips to Tulsa and back, the Jeep will be fine I think. If you live on (or really close to) campus you hardly do any driving at all...If I didn't drive to Edmond once or twice a weekend I'd probably put less than 20 miles a week on my truck. Parking on campus is so bad you won't want to leave during the week anyways, I park it on Sunday and don't get back in until Friday.

Oh, and once upon a time I had a really slick 87 Samurai hardtop, 3.5" lift, SXs, clean as a pin too. I ended up selling it so i could get something more driveable because at the time I had to make lots of road trips. I'm still kicking my own butt for that one, it was such a sweet little ride. It'd be built pretty good by now, too....

Oh, and if you ever have any Q's or anything about OSU or STillwater freel free to drop me a line. :)

OTHER SCENERIO: You sold it, your driving to a party in your normal person car unnoticed by the cops, posers, everyone, and the carload of chicks cruising by and as your at the stop light you stare at the poser rig on 31's and chrome with the light bar, thinking "what a tool" as the guy looks at you and thinks " that guy digs my shit, I am a wheeler".... You get to the party he's there talking to those girls totally acting like he's a badass sayng he hit's all the hard trails of your area (you know, the fireroads) but you know that rig couldn't get past the first obsticle (the curb). You'd like to go and call his bluff but.....you got no back up YOU SOLD YOUR RIG.

so keep it.....I know college is hard to offord but you got to keep your rig...I had no money with my rig as the DD.....then I went and built a comp rig. I still have no money but atleast I have a DD on 37"s and comp rig....It's nice when people are impressed with the DD, it's even better when I tell them it's not the one I wheel....

Your supposed to be poor in college...I was talking to Jason Paule after a comp and he surprised me when he said he ate Top Ramen 5 days a week and lived in his shop.......You know Jason, the guy on the cover of Petersons, in the SEMA show, and a top competitor

Did anyone else notice that he seems sold on the XJ?? or was it just me?? My opinion is...keep the heep and drive it. On a college campus you don't drive that much...unless you plan on making frequent trips home. Buy a cheap beater, park the heep. pick one...but i know i wouldnt let my 40 go that easy.

If there wre a 1:1 ratio of cherokees where your going how would I know if you were or not...If I pulled up next to you I'm sorry I'd probably think poser.....if it looks like sounds like a mall rig, looks like a mall rig, it's a mall rig.:flipoff2: Don't be offended...My DD is a 89 toy SAS,chevy's, and 37 MTRs but there is a hundred of those around here, so I call it my mall rig, it's the one I keep shiney..the other one is for wheeling

i am not sold on the XJ. i would drive a yota. i do plan going home to see my buddys and such on weekends...fishing camping wheeling. all that.

i think what it all boils down it is that i cant afford this jeep on 39's think about how much it is to wheel a big jeep. $$$ also i cant even afford to tow it to the trails. i have not had any fun in my jeep in a while. i think i bit off more than i could chew at to young an age. my parents cant afford my hobby either...i need to wait. till i get outa school.

if i dont sell my jeep i could not afford a nice DD (i drive a mazda protege so i know what it is like to drive a weiner car every day)

i think at this point school is more important.

How much are parking permits at OSU? Buy two. Move the Jeep every couple of days. Put some shitty 35's on it if it is totally uneconomical. Mine gets about three mpg better with the 35's on verses the 42's.

Lance
02-10-2003, 06:21 PM
I'd get a 80-85 Toy 4x, throw some gears, lockers, a crawler, and use it as a DD and wheeler. Sell the Jeep, the honda/mazda/whatever-it-is and put all the $$ into a reliable Toyota that can wheel and do DD duties.

ToyFamily

all toys are good :flipoff2:....but as soon as I see IFS my head says POSERno matter the lift tires, whatever but it'd getthe job done for fire road wheelin'.(i.e. my 89 2wd has been SASed)... :D 85 or older is straight axle unless you SAS a newer for the bodystyle the 85 and older are cheep

lower my jeep back down a drive it....i mean hell i could take off the 60 keep it in the back yard, hell i have a BRAND NEW 360 in my jeep, put some 44's under it and 35's and drive it every day....i think that is a great idea!!!

It's gotta be EFI - better gas mileage, better for wheeling, better in the cold, etc...

I have an 89 ext cab and I LOVE IT. Much nicer interior than the earlier models (for DD duty). Ext cab makes a world of difference for comfort too.

I have an SR5. It's cool for the power everything, A/C, cruise control, and popup sunroof. Good for long drives. Sucks for wheeling. The ADD IFS setup sucks wang. Having a chaindrive Toy t-case also sucks as there's no upgrading it - you have to replace it with a geardrive Toy case if you want lower gears, dual cases etc.

The 89 to 91 trucks are Japanese built. I believe the 92 to 95 trucks are all built at NUMMI in California. Not a big deal but there really is a slight difference in build quality.

Get a 22RE equipped truck. The damn thing is the best engine you'll ever own.

My opinion.

The more I read, as much as i hate to admit it, you may be on to something with joinin the cherokee crowd, IF you feel you have to lift it and stuff. It's just so much easier to put a little lift on a solid axle rig. I know exactly what I want to do with my Toy but because of the SAS it requires everything to be done all at once and I can't scrape together that much cash for something that's not a necessity.

Honestly, how much wheeling time do you think the new rigs gonna get? And how much of that is hardcore time? Probably not as much as you think. I've actually got to take my truck offroading solely for the purpose of offroading, TWICE since I got it. That's sad. Real sad. (Granted, I've been off road lots of times, but not in the true offroad spirit) I don't have any local places to go on a saturday morning for a quick run and I don't have time to make a weekend out of a Disney or Clayton trip. There's a guy up here that drives a Cherokee (of course!!! what else is there?) who's email i have that supposedly knows some local spots but from the pics I've seen they're nothing my near stock Toy can't handle. I haven't tried to get together and actually plan anything with him though. I need to at least find out where these places are...back to topic tho:

Let's forget that we're on the PBB for a minute. You can have a heckuva lot of fun in a *gasp* near stock rig. On *jaw drop* mild trials. You're going to be doing a lot of driving back and forth to Tulsa to see your family and friends, and trust me, even in my more or less stock (mechanically) 94 Toy the trip gets old quick. As much as I don't want to say it, doing the stuff I want to do with my Toy (SAS, gears, lockers, 35-38s) would kill me on the trip, gas mileage, comfort, everything. It'd be fun to cruise around town, but on the highway...it's doable, but not practical.

Here's my take on the deal:

Getcha a nice, clean, stock 4x4 of some sort. Something plentiful and reliable but easy to work on if you have to. And something with some off-road potential, even tho that's not going to come out till down the road a couple years. Once I graduate and get a job, I'm getting a nice DD and the truck gets off-roaded for real...by then all the DD goody will be licked off.

Here's my suggestions:

Toys:
--Pickup. 85 if you really feel the need to build it right away....if you dont' go for a solid axle though, get as new a model as you can (I couldn't find an 85 so went and got the nicest 94 I could afford). Get an excab if you can!!!!! My regular cab is NOT big enough for taking laundry and books and groceries, especially with a passenger (of course I kinda fubar'ed myself with my flatbed  ) And 22RE definitely over the 3.0 V6.
--4Runner. 1st Generation would make for a better potential wheeler, and the removable top is cool :cool2: but on the other hand a 2nd gen can make a good wheeler with some work and you've got a newer nicer rig with 4 handy doors.
--Tacoma. Really, just as much off-road potential as any other IFS toy (they all need a SAS) and you get a LOT better optional V6 and depending on your budget maybe a TRD package w/ a locker.
Jeeps:
--TJ? Is that in your budget? Seem to make for some pretty good compromise vehicles. Bolt-ons galore and they do draw the sorority whores looking for a fratjeeper.
--Cherokee. I'm just not a fan at all of these, but I suppose they can be decent vehicles, especially for a mild wheeler (that likes to blend in with the crowd)
--YJ? CJ? Keep it near stock for now?

what else is there? Xterra? Pathfinder? Exploder? Nissan Pickup? CRV  I guess it's really Toy or Jeep for a DD with some real potential. Although there's always fullsizes. Blazers, Chevy/GMC trucks. For some reason I get the feeling you're learning away from fullsize towards better gas mileage a compact size.

Eh, that's a lot of crap to write/read. Time for bed.

here's my suggestion....don't ask questions if you're going to argue with and shoot down everyone's answers! why the hell do people do this? they ask a question that they've already made their mind up about. Then when people who really don't care in the first place try to help they just get argued with. honestly what do you want?? if you want to wheel still figure out a way to have somethin you can make it to the trails with and also drive around every day. there are plenty of options here. Why not drive the jeep to school for a few months while at the same time workin a job. Within a few months you should be able to afford an old F250 or somethin to pull the jeep with.

Get a Toyota so you don't have to work on it. You'll be short on cash and not have space, so reliability is very important.

Although I must say an open top CJ would be VERY cool for gettin' the ladies :D

'85 4Runner would be the perfect compromise - removable top, solid axle, Toyota reliability, EFI. But everyone wants one, so they cost $$$$.

Don't risk your safety in one of those little cars. They go right under stuff and fold up into little balls.

02-11-2003, 09:22 AM
As much as i like jeeps i'd vote to get a toy to serve as a DD/wheeler

Another way to look at this is, how much do you have in your CJ and how much could you really get for it?

That's one reason why my CJ7 is in strorage while i'm going back to grad school, I'd take a hosing if I ever tried to sell it. Although I must admit the longer I'm away, the stronger the notion of selling gets...

Talk to Russ and see if he'll let you store it at Disney. Surely you've got friends that will let you stash it behind their house or something. Run the POS DD civic every day then swing by and grab your Jeep on the way to the Trail. There's plenty of good wheeler's around town that can help you out. If I didn't have a Garage full and Neighbors that would still used kitty litter, I'd let you store it at my place.

Where are you going to School?

EDIT:
BTW, I've got a lead on a cheap little cherokee. The guys that has it lives over on 97 between Prattville and Sapulpa. It's nothing exotic, just bone stock with a recent motor.

I love my Cherokee for the DD scene. Too bad it's the wife's and I still gotta drive the Blazer everyday :D

Why don't you trade me wheels and tires and run my 36's :D

The drive doesn't take long at all to Stillwater. I made it in my Blazer in about an hour from downtown. Tack another 45 minutes and your in Disney. From my house it takes me an hour and a half to get there.

ok i have decided on a toy pickup...(hard to do seeing how i have had jeep all my life) but the simple truth is that i have never seen a rig that you could beat on as hard as a toy and still drive it everyday. the thing is i don't know what to get. i have about 6g's and was wanting a good DD. what year is the easiest to SAS? what year is the best motor? i was looking at the early 90's with the newer body style x cab 4x4. i want to be able to eventually upgrade it to make it a crawler. so what is a good base? i don't want a 80's with a solid axle the look gay and i don't like the interior (important on a DD)

You will eventually take the interior out anyways...You know you will.

What are you going to do with you Jeep? Keep it I hope. You would lose enough money selling it to pay for your gas and still have a pimp ride.

Sell the CJ and get the XJ like you wanted. Sounds like you have your head screwed on straight and realize the larger priorities in life. You can always get another Jeep; school is the priority now.
