: Rod ends vs. Johnny joints
nuttzack 11-08-2001, 08:41 AM About to start my new coil set up and can't decide which to use or to use both. Johnny joints are fairly cheap and offer 30 degrees of misalignment and rod ends(40 dollar ones) offer 13-16 degrees. What I need to know is which is better for 3 and 4 link applications? Thanks!
fatkid 11-08-2001, 09:10 AM From what I understand "johny's" are the way to go. Not to mention you can rebuild them for cheap.
nuttzack 11-08-2001, 09:26 AM Ya, I think that is what I am gonna go with fatty. Another thing is that there is alot of mud around hear and it looks like the johnny joints are semi-sealed and rebuildable as aposed to the rod ends. Should I use them all around front and rear? Would there be any probs with doing that?
nuttzack 11-08-2001, 09:31 AM Ok, how about this. If I do a 4-link rear with johnny's on all the links combined with the light weight of the sammy, will I need to have a panhard bar in the rear?
gunracer1 11-08-2001, 10:00 AM it depend on how you set up your 4 link.
1SAWB 11-08-2001, 11:06 AM johnny joints are the way to go i just got all mine in for a total of 16:eek: damn thats a lot of money :barf: .they are bad a$$ tho
Al Kaholick 11-08-2001, 11:08 AM where do you buy them, and what do they cost?
Air Ride 11-08-2001, 12:28 PM I have had my johnny joints for two years now on my 4 link. They work great and are still tight. The rod ends on my steering all need to be rebiult.
Ben W 11-08-2001, 12:51 PM All you guys that have jonny joints, where did you buy them? Are all jonny joints the same, or are there various quality joints? The only ones I've seen are the ones allpro sells for $38 each.
rod ends are alot stronger.

I think that's what the Shaffer Coil Kit has.

Yes they are, However Zuks are light and Johny's are strong so where is the problem with running them?
nuttzack 11-08-2001, 09:16 PM Ok, I think I will go with johnnys on the lower links and on the uppers I will go johnnys where it connects on top of the axle and rod ends for for the frame mounts, so that I can adjust my pinion angle if I need to. How does that sound, I like it!

so run a smaller high quality rod end, if weight savings are what you are after.
nuttzack 11-08-2001, 09:28 PM Johnny's still have more misalignment and are cheaper! I like rod end too because of strength, but are a bit pricey and I dont know how well they do in muddy conditions.
fatkid 11-08-2001, 11:01 PM wieght wasn't the issue.
What is the issue...??? There is no problem with running them. If you want a joint of that style I would suggest the RE joint because of its ease of assembly. Also the preload adjustment is bitchin.
1SAWB 11-09-2001, 08:15 AM got mine from work summit racing there are 2",21/2"and 3"i went with the 2 1/2 inch there bad ass personaly i belive they will be a hell of alot stronger then a heim joint i can remember the price i got them at cost.before summit picked up currie i spoke to mike shaffer of shaffers offroad and he was the cheapest that i could find i would get them through him...

nuttzack 11-10-2001, 02:51 PM THanks for the info dudes, but after all that I went with aurora rod ends. Now its time to start workin!
fatkid 11-10-2001, 04:22 PM why, you bought the ones from spidertrax for $20 a piece huh.
O'well...
I'd go jonnies the next time around or large style rubber bushings and ford radius arm ends bushings the ones on the stud end . my teflon crappy $50 dollar rod ends fall apart every 6-8 months or so ,unless I had the money for chromoly super indy car hiems.
fatkid 11-10-2001, 09:09 PM but, but, but there stronger...
