I bought a d61 and want to run 5.13 gears, but they only go up to 4.56 for this axle. I talked to sandy cone and he said he makes a spool, but it requires 40spline axles. Are there any other options or should I just trade it in for a 60.

You can also run dana 60 gears on a dana 61 carrier with a ring gear spacer I think the required spacer is 1/2 inch thick, but don't run with that dimension Sandy would know for sure or you could get the gears and figure it out.

I think I am just going to return the 61 for a 60. I don't want to weld the stock carrier and go through the work and money for a custom spacer. :(
thanks though
Noooo dont get rid of the 61, sandy made a set of 35 spline spools for a man named jeremy. i was gonna get them but i found out my axle is a dana 60 not a 61. PM me if you want his number.

which guys phone jeremy or sandy? If it is jeremy, did he buy a couple for himself or to sell? Otherwise, I don't really feel like spending the extra money now for 35spline shafts since I still need to find a front rc60.

you already have the 35 spline shafts.
thats a negative they are dinky 30 spliners, which are way :flipoff: :barf: smaller in diameter than my 28sp. 9in. shafts
sandy build jeremy some 35 spline spools for his race truck. 2 to be exact. any way jeremy has now gone to 40 spline and sandy told me to give him a call and see if he still had them and if he wanted to sell them. but i did some research and the axle in question im getting is a dana 60 not a 61, so i didnt call. as for a spacer i asked sandy about that and he said its near inpossible because there would be now way to support the ring gear on its inner edge or something like that. PM me if you want jeremys number. or call sandy and ask about it.

OK, Stupid "newbie" question...
What the fawk is a D61, and how does it differ from a "normal" D60. How can you tell?? Is one better than the other??

The d61 was used in the rear of fords and some fronts of dodges. The axle tubes are thicker, spindles are larger allowing easy instalation of 35sp. shafts, the bracing and ribs on the centersection are comparable to the d70.
Also the pinion gear is offset to accomadate a larger pinion for 3series gears. they lowes t you can go is 4.56
They bacicaly are stronger and were made for fuel economy:confused: and for highway driving.
I think it was called the roadmaster option.
