D300 weeknesses

"I've heard that Dana 300's have week output shafts. Whats the deal??? I just swaped in a 300, and am now a little concerned.

Who has the upgrade parts?? Cost?? Are they worth it?? Should I even be concerned??"

My trucks a Scout II BTW.

You should be O.K. with the long rear driveshaft of theScout. It's on short CJ7's I see some woes. I never broke a stock Jeep D300. God knows I tried. I broke the Tera Low 4:1 set up 4 times in the last few years, and with a 6 cyl. engine. Well, I do have a lot of torque multiplication w/ 130:1 and 36" tires. With the several upgrades of parts and down stream parts on the TeraLowD300 it seems to be fixed now, even with the beating I give it. My bro has an AA 4.3 Atlas t.case he want to sell me, which has the 32 splines and pretty much bulletproof parts. I think I'll do it. He's going to 3:1 reduction on his next Atlas. Can you believe his low range is too low for his 2001 Early Bronco? He's at Las Cruces this week competing in the WRCC.
regards, as always, jefe

I've broken TWO rear outputs... If you're going to run a Dana 300, upgrade the shaft to the AA 32 spline unit.

Or you could put one of these on. Teraflex's new output shaft. About $260 through Trailquest.

Yeah, I got the one from Terra too. Looks good - but I paid $284. You got it for $260? Special deal - or can anyone get that price?

I also got the terra 4 to 1 - installing it all this weekend.

I don't remember the exact price I ended up getting. It was around $260 though. Trailquest had miss quoted me on some thing so they gave me a little bettr deal on it. The 4:1 kit was only $629 though!

The terralow for the D300 can be had for $579 from DC's 4WD center. But I paid $284 for the HD300 :(

So I guess it even's out.

I just talked to Trailquest - guy I talked to was pretty un-informed. I could actually "see" the "Deer in the Headlights look" over the phone.
ESPECIALLY when he decided to ask me what year my D300 equipped Jeep was and I said 97 Wrangler :D

Well you must have got a deal - they said the price is $292.30

This was after he had to call me back, as he had never heard of an HD300, or a heavy duty output for the d300

DC's 4WD email is DC's 4 Wheel Drive Parts Center (donaldii@bellatlantic.net)

I called trailquest also they confirmed 268.00 . What I would like to know is the differences b/w the tera v/s the a.a. output shafts and housings both are 32 spline and same o.d. anyone know?:D

BigHG

I really don't know what the differences are. I went with the Tera due to price as the other factors all seemed equal.

The terra and AA shafts are exactly the same spline count and diameter. BUT if you are getting Jess at High Angle Drive Line (http://www.highangledriveline.com) to make you a CV yoke, then he needs to know the one difference (not in the shaft, but in the tailhousing seal diameter).
Seal diameter on the AA is 2 and 1/8" it is 1 and 7/8" on the Terra.

Going to install mine right now

DRagging this old thread back up due to a search . . .

From what I am getting from this thread is that Trailquest sells a heavy-duty output shaft kit for a d300 t-case for $300 as oppossed to AA's $500? If so, how can I find out more? I went to their web site and found nothing.

Also, I only ever hear about the rear shaft being weak. Is the front one different somehow?

There is usually more weight/load on the rear, resulting in more stress on the rear output, than the front.

A buddy of mine was hopping all 4 tires off the ground, while climbing in Moab...turns out the internals of the D300 were the weak link. Both out puts were fine, but the internals were trashed:eek: Although, I haven't heard of many people busting a D300 that way:D

No he didnt have the 4:1. The gears were trashed, and the output shafts were fine.
