What would one use for the hinge when making a bumper mounted spare tire carrier?
I thought about using a small trailer spindle & bearings but it seems like it would be very bulky. Any suggestions?

Here is a shot of my bumper set up and what is used is not a trailer set up but one would not be much bigger then this. I have built with trailer spindles and you use a piece of tube .120 wall min. and just big enough for the bearings to fit tight in and build a race for the bearing and you are done.

You want strong, you get bulky...
I used some old drum brake Dana 44 axle outers to make my hinge, and I've never worried about strength. It's actually not too big, either. Check it out:

There's some more pix here (http://www.bc4x4.com/chrisw/projects/tirecarrier/carrier.asp), if you're interested:
Nice thing about this design is you can weld a stub shaft inside the spindle, and then use the locking hub to lock the gate open in almost any position. Great for when you're parked off-camber. The hub is a handy trail spare, too.
Here's a shot of a friend of mine performing a high-precision strength test:

This is how I built mine the first time Tire carrier (http://www.off-road.com/ford/bigbroncos/tech/em_bumper.html)
Sense then I have changed the mount for the tire.. It now has a spindle, hub and lockout mounted, and the spare mounts to that.
On the next upgrade, some time next month I plan on using this Hinge (http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm) at the asking price, I may just buy theres and be done with it. Save the fab time of making my own.

I was gonna post our hinge, but Bronco78 already did. :)
It's just trailer parts, the only difference is, we've got all the pieces already assembled and ready to go, so no worries about scrounging pieces to make it work.

And at $40, it's worth it to save me the time. I'll give a call monday and drop the order.:p
