i'll be running the 4cyl. what set up is the best, and thriftiest for the scout 80. in a search i seen a lot of people running the pertronix set up. i seen the kit in "jegs". what is included in the kit? if i understand it right you still keep the points, right?
also in jegs i seen a kit that eliminates the points, i don't have the magazine in front of me to get the name, but i'm pretty sure it was made by mallory.

gm ignition parts are interchangeable, right?

Thanks in advance,
Vinny

Take you question to the Binder Bulletin - you'll get more than enough info to make a good decision.

I'm going to give you an answer instead of just wasting posting space.
I like the MSD set up. You still keep your original points but they don't carry hardly any current anymore they just signal the MSD unit so they last indefinetly. You also get to use the original coil instead of purchasing a new one.

I agree 99% but I would also put on one of MSD's fancy coils too.:)

Umm, my gold box answer was very tongue in cheek. Very, very few people would say this is the best, or even a good system. When it works, it works really well, but it has a nasty tendency to quit working, quite suddenly, and quite inexplicably. The ingnition modules are not cheap, although they are a pc of cake to swap in, and there is not points adjustment, etc to screw with.

There are only a few folks around who still use the gold box ignition system by choice...

It is a pc of cake to install, but you never know when your box is going to fail. I carry two spares with me wherever I go. When it fails, you are dead in the water, no spark, no way to get spark, nothing you can do but hitch a ride to an auto parts shop and hope they have it (they usually have to order it in) or get towed home, although there are some ways you can *trick* it into working.....

Aww, rats. Don't folks know that is how the price of vehicle parts gets jacked up. I haven't paid that much for a gold box in years!!! Now folks are going to start thinking these things are worth money!! Grrr. Next thing you know, IH parts are going to be as much as EB parts!!!
