RustoleumWhite 11-09-2001, 09:23 AM Personal opinion:
for simplicity, keep it IH!! Bolt it all in, less hassle, less work, more
the recipy really depends on use. For my application: weekend wheeler/rock crawling
healthy (not nessearaly built) IH motor (V-8 naturaly). EFI, because it makes wheeling THAT much nicer. I prefer manual trannies, so t-19 wide. T-case, D300 is good, but gears in a D20 are cool.
If $$$$$$$ provides, crawler box is a killer idea. Crawl is good, selctable is even better <g>
If you startd getting HUGE, you may need to concider other alternatives, souch as F&R 60's, Atlas's ect. Personaly, when I start breaking things (or KNOW I'm going to break things) I'll go that route.
Scout Dude 11-09-2001, 09:28 AM Hey, you didn't mention the t-90 in the list...
It's all about $$$ and what you are going to use it for...I am definitly a build it overkill person but I'm sure that I will "get it awn" when I finally get it put back together.
I like manual trannies, v-8's, and round pattern t-cases so you can clock them up. Other than that...it doesn't matter what you have...
Old Scout 11-09-2001, 09:38 AM If I had the $$
Mopar 440 with a 60 over bore and a 4.125" crank, so we now have 511 cubes. Hooked to a NV4500 and an Atlas with Front and rear 60's:D :D :D
sdscouter 11-09-2001, 09:40 AM Hard to argue with an IH v8 with a wide T19 and a dana 300 with 4:1 gears - good crawl ratio, and it bolts right in.

I like my stock setup wide T19/D20 - no need to clock it when it comes from the factory with a flat belly. Saves me the hassle. :D
Stock powertrain seems like a good choice. The SV's are stout, a T19 is a strong transmission. Sure, the Dana 20 is breakable, but it's still pretty sturdy.
With the right mods a SV will spin up fast enough and make more n' enough power. A lot easier to just bolt everything in using factory parts, too.
Personal opinion? I like the Scout body and frame but the rest has to be GM.
Ben W 11-09-2001, 04:51 PM Pure rock/competion Scout - Cad 472/500 on propane, Th400, 32 spline Atlas II, RC60's, 39.5's.
Trail rig - whatever is cheap and not broken at any given time. :)

GMC as in "gotta mechanic coming"?
no way GM made parts are anywhere near as good as those IHC made

Abba,
When I'm done with the first revision, I'd be happy to wheel with you. maybe if I make it up to next years NWBRU.
oh, and it's just Joe.

And I'm Joe on the IH board, put in some time on the board then maybe you can start using your first name. :flipoff2: Newbie

I'll just go back to Not Quite Sane.

jdjanda 11-11-2001, 09:05 AM Well thanks to you all, I couldn’t just go SOA and be happy. :flipoff2:
Trouble shoot this for me.
Engine: IH 345, I’ll leave it for now as it only has 130K, the ignition will be changed out for a Pertronix, and MSD box. I’ll swap the carb for F.I. if I can find the GM parts in the boneyard I’ll run the Howell setup, else Projection. Maybe I’ll carry a spare carb and fuel pump. I like the IH motors, reliable, solid, etc. I can see no reason to swap it. I’ll pick up a short block for a rebuild in the far future.
Tranny: T98 as I have one in very good condition. Slightly lower first gear then a T19W, and a have an extra T98 (2wd) for parts. The Auto is history, I love wheeling with it, it just bugs me needed to watch the temp the entire time. I’ll keep one of my Autos in case I decide to switch back. If a do return to the Auto it will be rebuilt with RV gears and heavy duty clutches.
T-case: I’m still a little up in the air here, I should have a Dana18 t-case on the way in, I could do the gear swap and have 2.45 case, I would then add the Mr. Scout box. If the Dana 18 deal falls through then I’ll go the Tera route. Either way I’ll be in the 80:1 plus crawl range. The duel T-case setup would put me into the 120:1 range.
Axles: Here’s where you guys got me in trouble. Time for full width with the SOA. Hybrid D44 up front, with Hi-steer (Flat top knuckles on the way). Rear is going to be D60 of 14 Bolt, I’d like to go with FF, but it will come down to what I can find for the right price. Spool or welded rear, lunch box in the front (got it already).
There it is :flipoff2:

Why not a 60 in front?
Scouter 11-11-2001, 07:43 PM Like someone above said, keep the Scout body and frame and replace the rest.

Money, I have the parts to build the 44 front and I don't plan to run larger then 36's. However if I found a deal then I'd do it.

Don't quote me on this...well you can but I might be wrong...I think that the AA that I bought will allow me to raise it up even higher...
0ILBURNER 11-14-2001, 01:06 PM Can you get an Atlas with a D18-type output?
That way, you could have front & rear offset chunks...
scizout 11-19-2001, 03:58 PM I'm with Abba, put the GM gear in. I'm building a 65' scout 80 with 4 wheel coils, 425 hp 383 stroker, 203/205 doubler with an sm465. D60 front and 14 bolt rear with 4.56's and detroits. I just need the time to start fabricating. Although I will say I never had any problems with my IH equipment.
Snoopy 11-21-2001, 05:02 PM Whatever your comfortable with.
If I had a V8, I'd go beefy. Since I have a 120K mile old 196, I'm sticking with cheap Dana44s, 5.13 and a spool in the back. I'm comfortable with that ~ so that is the best option for me.

Did I read that correctly a Spool? What changed your mind?
