: Land Rover
bashed4runner 11-09-2001, 07:07 AM I know this is a land Cruiser forum but i was thinking if any one here knew it would probly be you guys, I am looking into buying a late 80 early90's land rover ( the 4runner not so much fun to drive around daily anymore) and was wondering about info on the 3.8 ,dependability and any thing else that I might look out for. any info would help , thanks!
dog walker 11-09-2001, 07:17 AM I dont mind that you post here, but I dont know much about Rovers! Isn't the 3.8 the all alluminum block/heads? If so, I've read articles that say that engine is on the weak side (powerwise). Other than that, I guess the're prety nice looking.

Jason M 11-09-2001, 09:33 AM You talking about the landrover or a range rover?
The 3.8 is not bad. It is basically the same motor as the tiny buick v8's but in aluminum. Reasonably low tcases. But they still have birfield's. What exactly do you want to know? If you burn rod or main bearing the block usually warps... Could be a fun project. Drop a 302 in it and some better axles and away you go!!!

I'd take that 4 runner over the Rover any day. I have neighbors with 4 rovers, Series 2- 88" .......2 Range Rover Countys and a Discovery.... guess which one is the best..........??? Your 4 Runner!!
Thay spend a wad to keep those things on just the Pavement!
PS..........do all Rovers leak as much as the ones my neighbor has?
MHO....bennett
Macgyver 11-09-2001, 12:59 PM first of all, you guys are slipping!!! WELCOME NEWBIE!:flipoff2: :flipoff2: second, any offroader may have info but i don't, never been around the rovers. you might try in the general tech section too, someone has bound to work on one or wheeled it. just a thought but have you searched for a LR bb? we don't mind helping out a fellow wheeler here.....it's a "cruiser" thing.... we understand!:usa:
Macgyver 11-09-2001, 01:11 PM ran in to a guy in the general and asked if he would post also for ya!
BJ On Roids 11-09-2001, 04:14 PM you dead right there bennet!!

this image, i feel, is too nice to the landrovers
i seriously wouldnt urinate on them even if they were on fire!
NO SIRREEE :smokin: :rasta:
kiwi4wd 11-09-2001, 09:42 PM Yeah, those LR seem to be weak in the axles. I've been with a couple of friends that have broken theirs. Sloppy gear boxes too.
Just feels wierd.
If you get the Coil sprung trucks , they are cool. Super easy to modify for some sick flex:D
Stick with a Chev.
Just a thought.
Reddog 11-09-2001, 11:01 PM Quit fawking around and get a real 4-wheel drive....Get a Landcruiser !
I own a 1970 Land Rover S3 swb & a1978 Fj40 offroader & a 1991 Nissan Safrai tow wagon .The Rover is a good truck its fitted with a nissan diesel STD gearbox Salsbury rear diff i've had it for seven years the Std rear axles on short wheel bases are rubbish thats why i'm running a long wheel base rear diff they are bullet proof hope this helps ;)

kiwi4wd 11-11-2001, 07:02 PM Hey Cruz,
Good to finally see another KIWI on the board.
Havin' a beer for ya
SLACKER 11-19-2001, 07:00 AM There is a saying regarding the Rover.
Why don't the Brit's build clocks?
They haven't figured out a way to get oil to leak out of them.
I have worked on several Rover versions and most parts seem to be dealer items or several days out, plus fairly spendy.
Just plan on resealing various oil leaks on a regular basis.
Also seam very gutless.
If your very tall you will feel like you are driving an early Suburu as the drivers seat seems to sit very high.
Just my opinion but a nice FJ55,60, or 80 series will deliver much more satisfaction.
