: Transmission/T-case noise?

I am currently running a 72 FJ40 with a 350/lc 3 speed/ lc t-case. Last summer my son was showing off for some of his Bronco pals and busted the t-case in half. I had a spare 3 speed and case laying around so I swapped it in. Right away I noticed that it was a lot noisier than the original set up. It has a whining noise that increases in volume and pitch as speed increases. The noise doesn't seem to be related to any one gear and doesn't change when I shift. It stops whining if I push in the clutch and coast. Does anyone care to make an educated guess as to weather it is the transmission or the t-case making the noise.

It is an indication that your idler gear shaft and bearings are worn out. This is a weak spot in the design of these transfer cases and it is always a good idea to check these and replace them before you install a T'case. The shaft and bearings run about $50.
