Need to know if I can put a diff cover on where the third normally bolts into the front of an FJ40.
Yah, it sounds strange but it would be so I could have the third so I could start assembling the hybrid that I'm building for sixgun and he could still street drive his cruiser (w/o a third or front axle shafts).
Thanks

Actually the answer is no.
It won't matter for what you are doing, but the 3rd member surface uses a paper gasket, and the cover uses cork. Iuse Ultra black myself.
The ONLY reason this matters is that if you used cork to mount the 3rd member, you are putting the axles out of alignment by a very slight amount (1/16")- I doubt it would really matter

Thanks for the info.
I'm not actually swapping gaskets.
I just would like to be able to cover the huge hole, where the front third member normally goes, with a rear diff cover for a couple weeks. This is so sixgun can still drive his cruiser around while I am assembling his hybrid front end.
If the diff cover won't bolt to it for some reason...here comes the handyman's secret weapon...duct tape:D

Hmm, same bolt pattern, different lenght bolts. Billy Bobs is laggin a wee bit on the Spicer Balls, apparently there is a problem in the manufacturing process that is slowing up orders. So the little things are going slow. Is your Welder handy? I broke my drivers side rear bottom shock mount off climbing into the bed of a 82 GMC pickup ( a coworker didn't think the Cruiser could do it.....I laugh) actually Brett is a very cool guy and even played counter balance to keep my hard topped clad rig from floppin in the end. I'll do it again and take pics :D Anyway Dave, like you were suggesting lets hold off a bit, the Cruiser is going to be pulling duty as hunting rig in the next month and I don't wanna be tweaking it. I'll bring a 3rd back from Dads house and polish my master cylinder swapping skills on his rig. This way we have time to plan out a Drag link, Main tie rod, and hy steer arm. I'm going to need a D44 Drag link cuz the one thats on my rig right now is too short.

Actually I think 1/16" is alot and would create a problem. However, the fact of the matter is that the difference in size is not a 1/16", it's more like nothing when you compress the cork.

Jeff - I agree that 1/16" is a lot, but over the length of the shaft it shouldn't be too bad.
With a new cork gasket (OEM) being 1/8" thick, I think when compressed (and because I have only put it on the cover side I have never reefed on it), my guess is that it does not compress to less than 1/16" Either way I wouldn't do it....
