I bought a 200Amp continuous duty Solenoid for $57 from Allied electronics. I have heard of people using the 100Amp solenoid for about a third that price, but I don't want any problems. I made my wiring with parts from the local welding supply. That's about all you need.

how hard can you make it, mount the thing and run the wires, use a $12 constant duty solenoid to isolate the two batteries, hook the triger wire to the alternator so they are connected only when the engine is running or however you want to connect it, and if this it to complicated for you, pay someone to do it for you <IMG SRC="smilies/clown.gif" border="0">

Pretty easy technically. I ran NW Power Products solenoid, and a three way switch. On (battery), off, On (keyed source)

#2/0 welding cable for all the connections, industrial grade terminations, crimped with my BF crimper.

I run them both all the time. It is important to have two batterys that are same in this type of setup though. Here is a photo http://www.respite.org/images/cj66dean/tech1.jpg

How long have you run this setup?

Typically, the batteries that are always hooked up together tend to discharge because the batteries are not identical. Manufacturing tolerances garantee that. In most instances, you will get a year tops before your batteries poop out. Once you accidentally discharge them, they are almost never salvageable.

You are either very lucky or everyone I know that has done this is very unlucky.
