: Should a driveshaft break like this?

ROKTOY

My front driveshaft let go about a week ago. It is a long spline
unit and it actually popped when I was driving my buggy up on
the trailer. I have run this shaft for a year or so.

Here is a pic of the end of the splines where it was welded.

Here is the yoke end where they welded the spline end.......what do you think?

If a shaft were to fail (over time)....would you expect this?

Doesn't look like much of a weld to me. Rotational force on a plug weld?

Looks as tho it broke in the area of the weld? I suppose I
wouldn't be surprised a bit to see failure there. Good that it
happened as you were loading rather than on the trail.

I always thought the yoke was splined... If all that was holding the yoke on was a single plug weld, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did...

Both mine and Chris V's broke the same way. Same builder?
Oscar? I ground the old weld out, rewelded it and then added a weld around the base of the splines. Don't forget to phase it before you re weld it.

If it was made by Gloco or Arizona Drivlines or what ever they call themselves.

It should! They all do! Oscar sucks! If not disregard my ramblings. :flipoff2:

Prolly after it broke. The driveshaft stays put and the yoke spins, or vice versa. Thats how mine looked.

He has a new name again, I can't remember it off of the top of my head. I know of at least one lawsuit he is trying to dodge. We installed about 20 or so of his driveshafts including our own personal rigs before we learned our lesson. So far we have had a 100% failure rate on his stuff. I now use Precision driveline in Phoenix. Great service. Good guys.

That sucks. Could you clean it up and reuse it, also add a pin through the side or make a few holes and do some plug welds?

Damn, that sucks. I have one of their long splines as well. What do I need to do to reinforce it?

They shouldnt of welded it in the inside of the yoke.. around the splined set up would of been much stronger..

Weld it around where the splines meet the yoke. If you also paid
extra for thicker tube, don't count on the fact that you actually got what you asked for. I paid up the butt for .250 wall DOM and got a chunk of rusty, pitted pipe. If you ordered it with one of his "special" Chevy style high angle C.V.s, you are S.O.L. They tend to blow apart at speed and come through the floor.

Geeze Jay! Maybe you should get a trailer that's rated lower than a 4.5!:D Get one that will at least allow you to drive onto it in 2wd low.

Need a real shaft? 1.5" spline out of 4340 alloy,3"x.250 chromoly tube. And the next question.......Too much! but sometimes it's worth it . 30-36" $850 no cv
I'm running mine in the rear of a 3000lb comp rig 400hp &38's
I take multiple 4' hops and haven't broken it yet.

You should see the one Oscar absolute dry anal raped for Coffee Boy. Tried to clearance the CV and removed probably 75% of the material and still didn't gain any clearance. Precision rebuilt mine, I'll send my next ones to Jess if it isn't a rush job.

Jess,

Looks like your 'competition' is no competition at all! I'll gladly pay shipping to get one of your custom driveshafts when the time comes. I have not seen anyone have a problem with what you sell--or give away!

and another thing bothering me - did we really need a lon gslip in the rear? are you running 3/4 elip? Jesse

Hey Jess,

I can't see the pic to really tell but you are suppost to neck down a shaft after the splines. You are suppost to neck it down to the minumum depth of the spline....reduces your stress concentrations which cause failure. other then that I have no idea. :flipoff2:

We used to recommend AZ drivelines, but after receiving a ton of complaints, we took them off our web site and no longer recommend them.

Jess's shafts work great and the customers don't complain about them at all.

Jess, he's running an offset D44 rear in his sami-buggy. Links and coilovers, He needs the same travel as a front shaft.

For me its all high angle. I dont think there is anyone else out there who could have built as complicated of a front driveshaft as I just ordered last week AND NOT FUCKED IT ALL UP. 1410 to 5 inch slipyoke to carrier bearing to 1410 to 12 inch slipyoke to 42 degree CV mated to a rockwell flange. Jess Rocks!!:D

after seeing this board and dealing with jess twice now.
i wont ever use anyone but high angle.
jess will always go the extra mile and builds sicko shafts.
this last time i sent my shafts to be "crawlerized", fucking ups decided to send one of them back to jess. i guess the crackheads didnt have sense enough to keep two identical packages together...anyway i get one tuesday, jess gets the other one thursday. we talk on the phone and jess says he will rattle their cage and try to get my shaft for the weekend.
what do you know, got my shaft the next day.

jess you are definately the man.
all you guys not working with jess are just asking for trouble.
peace

Has anyone had any bad experiences with Dick's Driveshafts???They did the rear on my Bronco for a reasonable price and even stayed open late so i could pick it up...A-1 in my book...

I think I got a piece of the same pipe. Quite a surprise when we cut it to shorten it. It is .250 wall, in certain places...........

At least it has one good weld on it now.:D

I WAS NOT TRING TO BE AN ASS on that post previous- there may have been a good reason to have a 6" area exposed or smaller area - I just hope there was a reason- :D Jesse

No harm done jess....I have offset pinions front and rear on my buggy....these are the shafts that i ran on my zuk also.
42* cv's with super long slips, and thick wall........:D

Im a little rough on things:rolleyes: including candy caning the lower 12" of the front shaft at the last calrocs event when the whole front end of the buggy was resting on it, and these shafts have held up with out a flaw!

I had great service from there when I was in to drag racing. I checked with them when I got in to rock crawling, but they refused to build the thick wall, long spline stuff I needed.

I took off my Gleoco long travel shaft when it was welded off center and could not be dynamically ballanced. Was going to use it on a trail only rig but I'm going to have to look at the end to see how its welded up:(

Yes, was just plug welded. Yes, this is a shaft that Gloeco (AZ Driveline) gave me after I returned my first one that broke while I was crawling across Dave Hickman’s backyard boulders.

I didn’t actually realize this one was broken until I was out in the dunes. Luckily we had a welder back at camp so I welded it back up myself and fully welded the spline area at the yoke circumference.

Jess……dunno why no splines. Looks like they took my Toy yoke, sleeved it down with a piece of tube, then slide this splined piece in, and just plug welded on the yoke end.

I’m a little worried about the rear Gloeco…..we’ll see if it holds now. Have used Dick’s in the past and had good service, but has been years ago.

Bob……yeah……probably should stick to less radical trailers… ;-)

Funny I have had two local driveshaft shops laugh at my spliced homebrew driveshafts…...shafts from both of those shops have failed on me.

Driveshaft shop welds that have failed 3
Jay’s driveshaft welds that have failed 0

Looks like I’m winning so far……

Jay

Uff, now you can not see if you had cracks before you broke it.

If there are polished areas, means that you have cracks.
