I am looking into purchising a range rover, late 80s early 90s and was wondering if anybody had any info on these, reliability, and other stuff. I am not using this as a wheeler but as a daily driver. Any info would help.

I guess if you wanted an ulitmate yuppie mobile, they are fairly decent. Parts are expensive and not easily available. Not my choice of a daily driver.:skull:

I bought an "89. It was the worst POS truck I have ever owned. Most of the parts were only available a the dealer(I had to buy ALOT of them) and were very expensive. It left me stranded a couple of times. It did wheel O.K. for a stock vehicle. I sold it after 6 mo. It was supposed to be my wifes daily driver, but she was afraid it would break down on her. ( BTW I bought it used with 43K and am a professional auto tech.) I would recomend a Toyota Land Cruiser instead.

Dude, try the 92-97 Toyota Land Cruisers. Rock solid reliablity, lots of space, toquey inline 6 (switched to 8 in 98), lots of em had leather packages and (best of all) 3 lockers were avail with the diff package. I had my eye on a 97 with 42K for $22K. You can pick a 92 or 93 for about $12-14K.

My neighbor has owned lots of Rovers (defender, Range, Disco) and he is always going to the dealership for one stupid problem after another. Supposedly the 97+ Discos had a bunch of kinks worked out, but still I would choose the Toyota for dependability.

I have a 96 disco as a daily driver. It has a few mods 3" RTE lift and 235/85 TrXus muds and I have not gone to the dealer for any parts at all. There are many parts supply houses that sell parts for normal prices.

dude, dont listen to these people. get one, they kick ass. but get an 87-88 if you plan to wheel is at all, they had the transfer with selectable differential lock (fulltime case). they have a 3.2:1 low range, gear driven, front and rear solid axles, a BAD ass frame that will take anything you can throw at it, front and rear coil suspension with a factory 3 link rear, a bolt on 3 link front kit for just over a grand, and a leather interior with power seats. and they can be had for $3000. for parts and some classifieds, see some of these sites: www.roverparts.com , www.roversnorth.com , www.britishpacific.com , www.dap-inc.com , etc. i say buy it and wheel the piss out of it. they are kick ass trucks that come from the factory with a lot of the parts that you guys are swapping in anyways. they make good daily drivers too, especially the post-1989 ones, with the 3.9L V8 over the 3.5. look at some built rovers here: www.safarigard.com , www.rovertym.com , www.rockware.net , www.D-90.com , and www.discoweb.org .

If you have any more Rover questions let me know, I have owned my fair share of them and have been on all the Rover mailing lists for a few years.

I had a '95 LWB and it was the biggest turd I've ever own. I would not consider another one. The AC is not designed for our Texas summers. The electonics were nightmarish (windows down, but not back up/ seats back, but not forward / Airbags lower, but not raise). It did make its way around the ranch with the utmost easy though, especially for a stock truck.

I would agree that when the Rovers work, the wheel probably the best out of the factory (cept for that 3 locker TLC). BUt electrical issues, computer issues, fit and finish, fuel pumps..all that stupid shit costs money and time to fix. WHich is why I say, unless you got a little english mechanic named Ian that lives with you (stole this from another thread), get the Toyota.

Last year I wheeled with a guy in a stock '92 Range Rover. It did pretty good all things considered but I think if it was mine I'd rig up something to manually control the airbags. It can be a bad thing when it is trying to auto level in the middle of a tricky situation.

LOOK ITS ANOTHER NEWBIE:flipoff2: :flipoff2: THAT SUCKS:rainbow: NO ONE LISTENS TO NEWBIES TO BE OFFENDED

Hey Casey I looked into the RR idea when looking for a new rig for Allie. We ended up with an Exploder for price reasons and she thought they looked like an Isuzu Trooper(NOT) because of the raised roof area. I want one still I think they are a sharp looking rig and I talked to alot of owners in the paper and they all said an extremely reliable rig and the only reason most were selling was to buy a new one. I was looking at 89to 92 and they seem to run 6 to 12,000. I like all the creature comforts. I think they even have a york a/c comp so when it goes then oba.Nice rig to come visit your friends down south.

Ok i've seen some bad ass rovers (running gm v-8s) and I've seen some lame ones
I used to work at a LR dealership and every few monthes we would take new owners out to wheel. for the first half of the day I was the passenger in a "demo" discovery. after lunch I got to drive. I like a dumbass thought i could go rippin through a small stream 8 to 18 inches deep the water sprayed up into the engine compartment. it was really cool how the alarm system went off the lights started blinking and the thing wouldn't start.

and so since the trail was so tight we had to tow it down the hill backwards. so go ahead and buy one, but don't think it's gonna be great from the start
you'll still get the honor of redesigning the parts that don't work

the same as with any rig you buy

Just don't try and take a stock height one over fordyce. Had a buddy tell another friend that he would have no problems. After all he had ARB's front and rear, skid plates, bumpers all around and one size larger tires. Turned into two days of pure hell. It's a great desert truck but not much of a rock crawler sitting that low. Anyway the rear lower control arms kept bending. We finally had to weld some metal rods onto them to keep them from bending. Everything else worked great, no mechanical problems. Just the rear lower control arms. He ended up driving back to chicago on the trail repaired control arms. Also the guy the invited him had to leave early on sunday so he didn't get to experience the real fun.

You Poser,

You didn't tell everyone how you needed a 4-Runner to tow your lame ass muffler home after you knocked it of on that pebble. What about the stream crossing? Not going slow enough to pervent some body damage. SPOTTER I NEED A SPOTTER. DAMIT WERE"S MY SPOTTER. Get your rainbow poser ass off this hardcore board. :flipoff2:

c/o Chrysler,

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, if you rip your muffler off cuz your "spotter" is too busy leaving beer bottles all over the place Make sure you bring a 4runner along w/a kickass roofrack to act as a spare parts cart. It's not good for much else. WITH THAT SUCKY IFS! Hey quit blowing my cover, I'm infiltrating.
