Obviously missing something. I have never seen an oil pan having to come off to get to a starter. There should be 2-3 bolts, and a couple of wires. How hard is that? You don't really know what you're doing, do you? Maybe if you can get some pics, I can help.
:D
MKBruin 03-02-2003, 03:38 PM ok so far I have taken off:
brace that has 2 bolts to the block and one in teh bellhousing.
frontal exhaust from the manifold to the cat.
2 rear bolts holding the starter on.
all three wires to the starter
one frontal support bracket attached to the block
the starter is loating free.....but there is nowhere for it to go! I can get about an inch of it out but there is still 1/2 inch tro an inch in the front of the bellhousing!!!!
dropping teh oil pan is the only way that I can tell to get at this fawker!!!!!!!!!!!
jasonmt 03-02-2003, 03:42 PM On my older 4.3L S-10 you had to pull the exhaust manifold to get the starter out. Thank god I rolled that fawker and got a Toy instead.
Friend of mine cut a notch in the frame to get the starter out:eek:
MKBruin 03-02-2003, 03:45 PM this design is by far the biggest clusterfawk I have ever seen!!!! my god this is just pissing me off!!!!!!
anyone work on a 2wd, 2.2, s-10?
Forget it. Park on a hill from now on and and just bump start that biatch every time. :flipoff2:
Motornoggin 03-02-2003, 03:53 PM What is preventing you from bringing it forward? Can you unbolt the motormount and bring the engine up for more clearance?
another way...
unbolt the starter then remove the bolt on the motor mount so you can jack the motor up from the oil pan about three inches. It should give you just enough room to squeeze the starter out from under the hood and it is alot easier than unbolting all of those rusty exaust bolts.

I don't know how many miles are on it, but if I rebuild the motor once in that 400,000 miles, I will still be $$$ ahead of you.:D
Your starter should have Chevy parts too.;)

yup, that's considered a performance AND cosmetic upgrade.:D
MKBruin 03-02-2003, 04:22 PM c'mon, give me a little credit! you think I own a 2wd s-10 on performance street wheels?
looks like I am going to pull the pass side motor mount bolt and use teh picker to lift it up. tht should give me some room......but I have to tell my roomate that it will be 2 more days before he can get his truck back!

You've obviously never worked on an IHC Scout :flipoff2:
MKBruin 03-02-2003, 06:14 PM yep, owned a 79 SII with the 196 4 banger.....
and actually I am in college and have a test and a paper due tomorrow, I have tuesdays off altogether.
and if you cen squeeze your ass under there, get at that mm bolt, chain it up, hoist it, swap teh starter, reatach mm bolt, reattach exhaust, reattach all rods, etc......in half an hour, than get your ass up here and I'll pay you.
larryboy 03-02-2003, 06:34 PM been awhile since i've done a starter on the 4cyl. i remember staring at it for awhile though:rolleyes: . i didn't remove anything but the starter. its possible with some patience, very little clearance though.
put plugs in a 4wd mini blazer yesterday and the middle plug on the drivers side isn't reachable without removing the motor mount and jacking the engine up. told em they get 5 or pay another 2 hours labor minumum. friggin chevys:rolleyes: .
Lord Baskerville 03-02-2003, 08:38 PM I've seen the crosss member cut for clearance.....
But, I remove the motor mount bolt and swing the motor out of the way a bit. Works every time.
Just another reason to tell my students why Fords are better:D
Cory
MKBruin 03-03-2003, 12:03 PM is it better to chain and hoist that side or just to rake out one bolt and jack from under the trans?
anybody else work on one of these fawkers?
