My laptop came with windows xp and It blows. I want to install 98 in place of xp. When I put the 98 disk in it says you cant use the disk with xp running or somthing like that. So what do I need to do to install 98 without loosing any files. Or Do i just need to back up what I want.

Well, if you give XP a chance, you will like it better than 98, but anyways

XP doesnt like to go anywhere. You will have to format.

Get a boot disk with fdisk on it and wipe the partition. Format, and then install 98

I hope you at least have 98se

You would need to fdisk your hard drive to FAT 32 since it's probably NTFS. Then you'd format the drive, and then install 98. But you're nuts if you think Windows 98 is better than XP. Give XP a chance... You can make it look similar to Win98, just gotta tweak settings.

Do tell - just what blows about it?

I could possibly understand wanting to stick with a good solid NT, but 98? Sheesh....

You couldn't pay me to go backwards now - XP's ability to handle new hardware, auto recognize digital cameras, image viewing, ease of networking... What's not to love?

Plenty, but the people that have those qualms go to linux... Not 98

Dont do it. XP takes a bit to aclimate to, but you prolly wont regret it.

The fact that you almost never look for drivers, for anything, is worth alot.

Also, If you can, get XP professional. Kazaa has it, or you can shell the cash out for it. I just use my school's copy.

Basiclly all my other machines have 98 and thats what Im use to and its what I like. So theres no reason to upgrade, alot of software I have doesnt work with it either. Ive herd good things about 2000 pro, and nt. The only reason im switching to 98 though is because its the only other one I have.

BS on programs not running on it - you are just making excuses now. You can change the settings and XP will run software like it was Win98, or even 95.

You can change the setting and make it look just like the old windows too.

amen- there are very few programs that are a pain in the ass to get to work for XP that work on versions like 98. what you will find is that you shit will get out dated even worse if you stay all the way back in 98 for very much longer. atleast move up to 2000 NT or something better - can anyone say Linux? but regardless you can make XP function like 98, and yes you will have to back-up your stuff and format your HD if you want XP gone.

Not only that - but if you reformat, you run the risk of your new hardware not being suported by 98. That is a REAL issue you are likely to run into in the odd, backwards walk of absurdity :p

Uhhhh.
for those of you dogging Win98SE... :flipoff: I still run iton my home PC.

Now that I have said that... i run 2kpro and XPpro at the office exclusivly.

However, back To Topic....

To get rid of XP... Yes.. you will ahve to back up the data you want to keep and then FDISK the HDD and repartition it. Then Reformat, then install 98SE. If you are installing plain old 98, i'll come kick your ass.

Now, that being said... if you are dumping XPpro for 98SE.... You are an idiot. Period. get used to Xp and learn to love it. Support for 98 is dying next year, which means that there will no longer be support for the drivers either. so.. Stay on XPpro. Do not land on NT, skip directly past 2000 and go straight to XPpro. And ME? FAWK ME! I mean.. Fawk WindowsME! throw that fawking CD right in the trash and never look at that abomination again!

Ya, its the most common program on Kazaa... I have the iso on my harddrive right now. just search for it, and make sure you are getting an ISO

Also make sure it has alot of users, so you know its the real one.

yes you can get it....there's no way to tell if it's the right thing untill it's downloaded (you can make a safe guess by checking file size of legit disk and comparing it to the file size of the one you'e downloading) -

yes you need a code, and a correct code if you plan to update it on windowsupdate.com

and to answer the question that wasn't asked - NO it's not legal to do this :(

for all you other guys, I have a couple of things that do not work with XP that are designed for 98SE...a lot of my games will not work (even with patches and updates) and things like video cards that are designed for 98 are not 100% compatible with XP - EVEN using XP's own drivers.... my Voodoo 5 AGP needs a third party hack driver to even be remotely stable, and I still get the ocassional video induced crash....

that said, I would take XPpro over any other windows OS any day...

I forgot, you need Kazaalite

Kazaa blocks some things from searches

yes i understand that and would rather not do illegal things. However, they charge too friggin much for this damn program. If they had made ME an even remotely decent OS i wouldn't have to try so hard to get XP. Then to charge 400-500 bucks for it is just ludicrous. I'd buy a whole new computer before buying that.

Try using any older sonic foundry software. Regardless I dont like it. Aside from the other errors I also cant stand the blue screen error I get. It will just goto a blue sceen out of nowhere and say some real long message and reboot before you can read more then 2 words

Yes, that may be because of your hardware. If using hardware designed to work on XP, it can be hard to crash it sometimes. And the damn thing is fool proof as far as fools go. We tried deleting all kinds of files, and it just makes new ones when you reboot.

i'd say that running the voodoo card in and of itself is cause for unstability. :D

Since security is usually a big concern on laptops, reformat your drive and install Win 2000 Pro. At least you can still keep the drive NTFS and have logon security. Don't forget to back up your files first.

I got it the day it was released and had no problems with it on 98SE ever - I know it's obsolete now, but XP claims full support of it, and I claim they're full of shit ;)

You must have a more than 512MB of RAM to run XP. I had ME and it sucks big time. Get Win 2000 its SIK. Hella faster and it doesn't load bullshit on your computer like ME did with me.

You might have problems reading files created with XP with older versions, at least that's been my experience with a handful of files.

That said, I *love* XP, it's the most stable Windows OS I've ever run, and I find it really flexible and easy to use. And I DO run some older software meant to run on 95 with it, no problem.

ISO is an actual CD image file, as opposed to just the files.

Exactly. I ran 512MB for a year with XP and had no problems. I just upgraded to 1GB this last fall for photo crunching reasons.

I am not an advocate of software piracy, but if you deem it necessary, an ISO file will serve your needs. ;)

XP just flat kicks ass... it's worth the extra cost...

The extra stability of the NT kernel, the faster boot up times, the faster program launch times... it's just plain better!

Besides... XP isn't that expensive... it's only $30 at the company store :flipoff2:

You want to load 98 instead of XP?!?! You just need to box your pc back up and take it back to where you got it.
