: FJ60 Steering box Pitman arm options...
cruiserbrett 11-10-2001, 02:21 PM I am installing an FJ60 P/S Box in my FJ40 and the drop of the FJ60 Pitman arm will interfere with the spring under compression. Does anyone have experience with any easily sourced pitman arms that fit on the FJ60 Box? I am looking for something with about 1 inch drop(about 1.5" less), maybe out of a Toyota Pickup??? Thanks!!!
BJ On Roids 11-11-2001, 07:10 PM there is an arm that fits, its off a vehicle we have in Oz called a daihatsu feroza, and the arm is FLAT, no bend at all, may require you to lower your 60 series box, but i have no troubles, with my 60 box, and it compressed right up!! you got the standard bump stops in?
cruiserbrett 11-11-2001, 07:59 PM Sounds awesome! I have not actually mounted the box permanently, as I am just mocking up the setup, so I could just tilt the box a bit more. Could you source one for me? I dont think we have those trucks here...
BJ On Roids 11-11-2001, 09:29 PM dude, i just had another look at mine!!
and if my springs flex up and hit that, then, i'd really be in a lot of trouble!!
how far forward are you putting it?
got any pics of it sitting there or your ideas?
put em up, or send em to me, ill have a look!
:rasta:
cruiserbrett 11-11-2001, 09:44 PM I'll get some pics to you tomorrow or so. It is JUST far enough back so I dont trim the from grille/bib at all. I made the shaft from a Toyota p/u shaft that I turned down and sleeved to couple to the machined FJ60 Large universal joint and splined slip joint. Sounds complicated but works great. I am going to use the ALLPRO Hysteer setup with the FJ80 tie rod ends. I have not picked out the bump stops yet. Waiting to flex the suspension for clearance checks. I am interested in the Pitman arm...are they hard to come by there? The drop on the FJ60 on is just too much for the future spring over...
Beanz2 11-11-2001, 11:50 PM daihatsu feroza = daihatsu rocky in the US

BJ On Roids 11-13-2001, 08:41 PM thats it, that black ugly thing! i think?? maybe it was something else, check the arm on that!!
btw: i had a brainstorm on this the other night!
you took your 40 series box off right
they have a very straight pitman arm! straight up and down, think sideways, bolt this arm straight to the bottom of your 60 box?
does this sound feasible or do i look stupid?
rob
bludog 11-14-2001, 12:30 AM Rob, I looked closely at the red 40 that won the Tuff Truck Challenge and it looks like he used his 40 pitman arm that actually goes upward and has the correct taper for the tie rod end. I will be trying this as this looks perfect.
Hope it fits, have not tried the splines yet.
cruiserbrett 11-14-2001, 07:05 PM I looked at the FJ40 arm and I think the slpiines would match. The arm on the US spec 40's when mounted on the 60 series box would seemingly hit the crossmember because of the bend. Have you tried the Daihatsu arm? I think the straight arm would be the best option from my perspective. I still need to find one... Any one have pictures of one mounted?
BJ On Roids 11-14-2001, 11:06 PM dude, did you get the pics of mine?
move your box closer to the firewall, by putting it so far forward you are really causeing yourself MORE headaches
email me:
HERE (rob@hawkinstpt.com.au)
ill send ya pics of how its done, unless you got my pics? see i moved the shock tower back a few inches, enough to flip the bolt and get my 60 box on schweeeet!
:smokin:
cruiserbrett 11-18-2001, 12:41 AM I found a P/S and non P/S Daihatsu Rocky and the Pitman arms both had a ball joint incorporated into the end of the pitman arm. Not going to work with the setups as I planned it... Does anyone have a picture of the 70 series Landcruiser pitman arm? I heard these have less drop than the sixty series arms...I need something with about .5"-1" drop that fits the FJ60 steering box shaft
Thanks!
cruiserbrett 11-18-2001, 12:50 AM Hey bj42...
I got your pics! Looks good. I am putting my box right up against the front apron/grille because I am using an FJ55 radiator(the radiator mounting frame is trimmed) that is 6" taller than stock, so the steering box is not an issue. Also the shock tower will be custom, and the axle will be 3.5" further forward soon once the spring over is completed with FJ55 springs....Your setup still uses the FJ60 arm right???
Thanks for the pics!
bludog 11-18-2001, 03:12 AM Yes his is a 60 arm.
Whats the go with the spring loaded joint at the pitman arm, can a std tie rod end be used throughout the linkage setup?
Anyone know?

yah, like bludog said, 60 arm! uhhhhhh, move your box closer to the firewall, that way your box, when you mvoe the diff forward should sit exactly on top of the diff, or like mine, just in front of the diff, for max. clearance! think spring arch and less clearance at front more at middle, so move your box back! why does it need to be right up at the apron? that way you got clearance! and thats why i wanted to see photos of what your talking about!
no worries about the photos, ive sent those photos to a hundred people, i mightve been better off putting them online!! hehehehehe, but yeah, just mock my setup, and if you're fabbing a custom shock mount itd be even easier again  just mount your box wherever you feel like!
