: 14 bolt question
Drunk Guy 10-16-2001, 06:41 PM I have heard that the 14 bolt is too heavy and also hangs down too far. The part of the diff that hangs down, can you just grind that part off and get back about an inch in clearence. If this is not true just let me know. Also would value all of your opinion on wether to go with a dana 60 or 14 bolt on a tj.
Beast40 10-16-2001, 06:49 PM A shaved 60 is the best axle for a TJ, plus a 60 has more locker and gear choices then a 14-bolt.
yldkat 10-16-2001, 06:50 PM You could, but why? It would be allot of work.
I'm seeing articles where they cut them out like the D60 and trim the ring gear, again, I'm not sure it's worth all that. Waay too much axle for a Jeep. It's big in all the wrong areas, except axle shaft size.
High5 10-16-2001, 07:10 PM i run a 14bolt in my jeep and yes you can grind the big lip off the bottom. what other locker is there other than a detroit??? the detroit for a 14bolt is also like $200 less than a dana60 detroit. 5.13's not low enough? not many people run lower than 5.13's. i run 62" wide full floatting 14bolt with 1.5" shafts that came that way stock. see if you can find a d60 like that. i only paid $150 for it too. you can keep your rear 60's i like my 14bolt.
NE-RokToy 10-16-2001, 07:41 PM If you really need something like a 60 might as well go to a cheaper and stronger 14 bolt. Is it to much for your jeep? I don't know but if you need more then a 44 might as well go all the way to the 14 bolt. There is alot of material that can be taken off of the bottoms and if you are running big tires it doesnt matter as much anyhow
Drunk Guy 10-16-2001, 08:19 PM for a locker i want to go arb is there much of a difference in price between the arb for the d60 or the 14 bolt. 38' tires is what i want to run so i guess the 1 or 2 in on the 14 bolt wont really matter too much.
Shawn 10-16-2001, 08:49 PM I run 37" tires and I drag my 14 bolt all over te place
But hay,,, who cares,,,, what am I going to do break it
CJ-Jeeper 10-16-2001, 09:01 PM I don't think an ARB is available for the 14 bolt
SwampTJ 10-16-2001, 09:13 PM Go to the junkyard & whatever you stumble across first, go with it. I like the 14 bolt myself, detroit is the only way to go.

I thought about going with a detroit, but then I started thinking (there I go thinking agian, man I have to stop doing that) no really now i did want to go with a dertoit but In the snow on the road I was under the inpression that it isn't all that good to be locked up, so i would like to be under control of if it is locked up or not. I agree on being locked up off road, but an arb will give you the best of both worlds wouldn't you agree.

This is what I plan do do if I go 14-bolt.

mudpup 10-17-2001, 08:46 AM I was going to go with a 14bolt at first and run 36" tires, but the guy I was buying it from told to not bother with it cause I would drag a$$ all over the place. His advice was to run a 38" tire minimum for ground clearance reason.
Shaved over an inch off this 14 bolt, took about 20 mins. with a skillsaw and grinder.

Drunk Guy 10-17-2001, 01:52 PM Thanks for all the info
Fat Knobby Tire 10-17-2001, 06:19 PM yea, 14 bolts are like freaking 9 1/4s how they hang LOW. the full floater is a major plus, but if you can run some large tires. What size were you planning to run on your TJ?
Drunk Guy 10-18-2001, 12:37 AM 37 or 38 if i can get them to fit I am really thinking of choping the finders but I have to drive it everyday and the cops around here will have a lot of fun with me if i do that.
High5 10-18-2001, 03:31 AM there is only a 1/2" difference between my shaved front dana60 and my rear shaved 14bolt. shave them and run 38's. you'll have plenty of clearance.

Know-it-all newbies... Derr its the new trend git wit da times! A detroit for a 14 bolt is the cheapest on the market! It doesnt replace the full carrier so its less junk you have to buy. True it only goes up to 5.13 big fawkin deal unless you have a stock motor

Yeah too much for a jeep Another newbie spouting off useless negative worthless info to up the post count... How many 14 bolts have YOU seen break??? They are a lot of axle and they do hang low but lock it all up and it wont matter drag it across anything and dont worry about it. With axles that big just gas it and go
H8monday 10-18-2001, 05:46 PM The newbies probably just got done reading that JP rag, where the corporate 14, along with the Ford 8.8 were both listed as axles to avoid. Sheeeesh I sure fawked up, I have been dunning an 8.8 with great results fro 3 years, and Im in the process of swapping in a 14 bolt. What do you expect, from an off road rag that listed a wood grain steering wheel as a good interior upgrade.
NEWBIES!!! Go wheeling before you start spouting off that swill you call advice!!!
Charly 10-18-2001, 06:27 PM Really??
