thats the problem with lifts to me, a four post one is great for a lot of work, but it sucks balls at others (like changine suspension stuff, etc), but is the safest.

a two post one is great for a lot of stuff, but is more of a pain to put a vehicle on.

if i had to pick one kind to get it would be hard, but i would probably have to go with a two poster.

I would only get one of those if I lived in a place with a HOA neighborhood, and had to park my BMW under my Porsche, so nothing is in the driveway.:p Well...thats the only apps I have seen 'em used in before.:flipoff2:

Pretty cool, but if I put my Daytona on the top of that thing, Joann's Jetta would get an oil bath  :D

I am thinking if I ever get a lift (the shop was built to handle one in the future) it wil be whatever is cheapest :p

But seriously.... whatever is cheapest :p

I am thinking a 2 post for me, but a buddy used to have an old cylinder type in his barn and that thing was nice and low profile when not in use...

That's a good point, the 4 poster will get in the way when you don't need it.

You better hope nothing ever goes wrong with it, they can leak down while you're under it.

I would think it would be pretty slow. Would still suck to come out the next morning and see the lower bunked car squashed, like Chris Farley did to David Spade in Black Sheep :D

If set up properly - any leak down would be slow - not "drop on your head" fast :p

All of the vehicle lifts that I have seen have mechanical stops. Even if the hydraulics leak down or worse, pop, all of the load ends up on a mechanical failsafe.

I'm sure TN is a good 40-50 years behind on regulations, but I don't think that type of lift is allowed to be put in, anymore. 1 I think they like to kill people, 2 they like to leak oil into the ground...IIRC

OTOH, you can buy 'em for around $50-$100 from the right guys.;)

It's not that the four posts get in the way. It's that that lift is essentially a drive on STORAGE rack. Space saver really.

The vehicle is still carried on it's suspension.

No brake work, tire work, Ball joints, axle shafts, lift/suspensions- forget it. You want to be able to get the part your working on to comfortable work height. These are the reasons to have a lift. You might be able to change the fluids easier though. Tranny work too, I guess. Kind of a mobile floor pit handy for somethings but not for the things I need a lift for.:D

Businesses may not be allowed to put one in - but I am willing to bet a private individual could :p

And yes - they can be had for pretty cheap....

YEah.. but i think they are talking those old in floor post lifts. Those have no built in safety like that, that I know of.

Keep quiet when you do. A guy that I work with was gonna put one in that he had laying around (payed $50 for it) in his new shop. He lives out on a farm and they wouldn't let him put it in. So accidentally forget to get a permit, especially since all the "new construction" would take place indoors. :D

It may have been set up properly, but after 10 years and the O-rings have detiriorated, they will leak off and fall, I've seen it. We had to put a mechanical stand under it to hold it, when you went to lift it off the mechanical stand it would hit the stops at full force and scare the livign shit outta you.

Why not look for auctions where auto repair businesses upgrade or go out of business.
Tried Ebay?

Uhhh... then wouldn't I just install new O rings before it went in the ground?

Back when I worked at the dealership the hoist I had in my stall was a two post in ground WITH drive on ramps but I had a secret weapon to do suspension/tires/brakes, 4 air bottle jacks that were mounted to I-beams that slid in tracks on the ramps.
