What would you recommend for a dig cam in the $200-$250 price range?

Or you could just tell me what yours is.

Edit: Is there a recommendation from the crowd on what to look out for. I am doing some research, but first hand experience is much appreciated :D

Get the highest pixel count you can.

This is a hard question to answer as there are many variables to consider. Do you want something small and compact, or can it be a little bigger and have more features? How many Megapix do you need - what quality of image do you have to have? Does the type of storage medium matter? Optical viewfinder or Digital viewfinder? Etc. Etc.

I have a Fuji Finepix 2800. Only 2.1 Mega pixel, but it has a 6x Optical Zoom, and will record 60 seconds of video at one time (although in a small 320x240 format). Mine's a little bit bigger than most in that it won't fit in a shirt pocket, but the added features are worth the increased size.

Amazon.com has this camera listed at $279, and comes with free standard shipping.

You could also try Steves Digicam Reviews (www.steves-digicams.com) to look for models that have the features you like, then go to a site like Amazon to find out what the current market prices are. (I'm not a particular fan of Amazon, but they did have a great price on my camera when I bought it, and their prices on accessories were reasonable too. The free shipping part helped to seal the deal).

Good luck, and don't forget:

We want pics once you get the new camera :D

I like my Fuji Finepix A303. 3.2 Megapixels. I'll get a pic of it later, it was $300 when I bought it at Christmas, maybe less by now tho..

Spaceman: thanks, I'll check that out. As far as pics, they're already out there somewhere........

I agree with checking out Steve's. It'll help you decide on which features are most important to you. My only recommendation is to get one with an optical zoom. I just got a Nikon Coolpix 4300, and it has optical then digital zoom - no pressing other buttons to use the digi zoom.

Check eBay for good prices. But shop around! Often if you find something new on eBay you can find it cheaper elsewhere.

I got an Olympus D-520 at CostCo for $229. It's a 2M pixel.
Here's a pic I shot with it.

I've been real happy with my Canon PowerShot S30, 3.2 Megapixel, 3x Optical/3.2x Digital Zoom. It had the things that were important to me: decent megapixels, dig/optical zoom, small, decent size LCD, and a rechargeable batt. It will also do short movies (although I havn't used this). It also uses a Comapct Flash Card which is an easy to find, relatively inexpensive media. Good luck and uhhh we still want pics:D

Not so obvious. I was recently reading an article in B&W magazine that said most professionals consider the lens quality the most important things when looking at digital cameras. Mpix rating is about #3 or 4. I would agree with this. Also something to consider is looking at what kind of compression the camera uses. The less compression the better the picture quality. My camera is a 2.1Mpix camera but the lens is out standing. Here is a nice shot I took with my pidley little 2.1 Mpix camera.

Sony MVC- CD1000 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonycd1000/)

I didn't mention what type it was because it isn't in the price range mentioned. I just wanted to show that Mpix rating isn't as important as people believe that it is.

You have to do a little more digging. The lens on the 1000 is a 10x optical zoom 52mm lens and additional wide angle and telephoto lens are available for it. A good right hand rule is to look for something with a standard 52mm lens if possible. This is much larger than your average digital camera lens thus giving you a "flatter" image.

Alright, I searched, but you know ShitShat is purged quite often, so you're Newbies Boobies pics are long gone. :(

But apparently DSI has them. :goofball:

Thanks again for the info everyone. I have narrowed my search down to a few. I am going with the middle of the road type of camera just because I don’t plan on using it for super-duper stuff. I do a lot of film photography and have my own darkroom, so this will mostly be a play thing and use around the office thing.
