when using the solid spacer between pinion bearing instead of crush sleve is there shims to use there or just one the pinion carrier?

you need to use shims to set the pinion bearing pre-load ( 9-15 inch pounds if memory serves ) the shims on the pinion carrier are there to set pinion depth in the case.

Ya what he said above... PLUS..
Install the pinion in the housing before setting up the gears,, get the pinion preload (spacer and shims) correct, then install gears, get setup correct, check pinion preload again... you'll most likly find it good to go.
