: Dana 20 smashing
SnowScoutII 03-07-2003, 05:51 PM I have a dana 20 in my 72 scout w/ a t-18 4spd, I pulled another dana 20 out of a 78 traveler and I would like to know if there is a adapator for them for some lower gearing, I have a hunch I may have to go with a Ford Dana 20 bacuse of the output shaft but would rather use the one I already have, any suggestions? I am a poor college boy so cheeper is better if possible Thanks!:D
you can get lower gears, but they ain't gonna be cheap.
SR5Dave 03-08-2003, 03:48 AM My 41 willys has Dana 20's... I didnt even know they made them that small until my Dad pointed it out.
He tried to peel out once and snapped both axles, had to drive it home in 4wd with only the front spinning, He put 33"s and regeared it... I dont recall it being cheap (then again, I cant remember anything that was on that thing)
I think he is talking about a tcase. ;)

A dana 20 is a transfer case.
Model 20 rear end is a AMC thing.
How about using Ford Dana 20 gears in the IH case? It will get you to 2.4/1
EBSTEVE 03-09-2003, 01:32 PM If the Bronco 20 gearsets will work there are two different aftermarket gersets, one is about 3.15 and the other is about 4.86. the 4.86 set is about $1500. I would say either use a stock to get to 2.4 if you can or save your money for an Atlas.
HTH
uglyscout 03-09-2003, 07:59 PM You can swap in a combo of gears into your Scout t-case to get 2.46:1, ton of people have done it. Do a search here or on google.
Dana 20 2.03 to 2,46 swap (http://www.jeeptech.com/convxfer/2.46-20/)
Tera Low 3.15:1 (http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/xfer/terad20/)
SnowScoutII 03-14-2003, 11:49 AM HEy thanks yo I think I got pointed in the right direction that extra transfer case has finally come to a good use other then holding the door open:D
Sully 03-14-2003, 12:06 PM Terra Low makes a 4:1 low range gear set for the Dana 20, I believe.
Jeep/IH Dana 20 internals are the same. I can't promise you the cases are. There is a difference between the cases for Jeep and IH D300's, so there very well may be on the 20 too. I've never bothered to check.
SnowScoutII 03-14-2003, 01:03 PM Too badd i am a poor college boy, I wish I had lower gears....But until then gas it till it goes! Thanks Guys!:flipoff2:
kyrel69 03-14-2003, 07:58 PM will then you should get a Bronco d20 with the bull gear(output gear off of the back of the tranny or t-case input gear what ever you want to call it) I am running Bronco d20 gear in a jeep d20 case you have to clearnce a little room on the bottom of the case to put in the bigger gears. You can get them for under 100 bucks if you look around for them
also you only need a Bronco case but you have to mod. one of the shift forks to fit around the bigger Bronco gear. This way you do not need to find the d18 case for gears as well.
Oatmeal 03-15-2003, 11:15 PM Dana 20s in early Broncos came in two diffirent ratios 2.46 and 2.33 , early (T-shift)=2.46 and late (J-shift)=2.33. I read somewhere that you have to use some of the early EB gears (not all of them) and a gear out of a Dana 18 to make the swap. The guys at Hick's 4x4 in Pomona, Ca. are very knowledgable on this subject. Sorry, don't have thier number handy but, you could call information.:)
