MON 11/12 – Axle Q and A: What do you run, what do you want, locker, spool, ARB, etc.. Is a 44 enough or it’s gotta be a 60. Are 14 bolts misunderstood? What axles swap onto my rig.

Dream: 60 RC front and rear spool in the rear ARB in the front.

Real: Dana 44 full width in the front with EZ-locker, and Dana 60 or 14 in the rear with spool. The 60 or 14 will depend on what I can find cheap, full floater will be ideal.

After the debate about spool vs detroit in the real I think I can live with a spool. The rig will be trailered in the near future. I also like the idea of a FF is the rear for ease of trail repairs.

I'd like RR 60's front and rear. I think the 14 bolt is slightly stronger, but I like the idea of only caring one spare R&P. stuff both with ARB's.

Reality looks like front 44 and rear 60. the 800 I'm getting has something in the back (trashlock?), so I'll probably stick it in front and a rear EZ untill I can afford better

Well, I voted for 60's...(surprise, surprise)

Because Heaps are lighter weight, they can get away with 44's and bigger tires. Scouts, especially you Scout II owners, need a heavier axle if you are going big. I would at least throw a 60 in the rear of any Scout...not just for the axle size but for the pinion size.

It all depends.

Trail rig? The next evolution will be a '44 (or HP44) front, 60 rear, and 8-lug until a front 60 falls into my lap. Detroit or Lockright.

Tow-rig? RA-15 rear. I'd like a '60 front for the weight capacity and big brakes, but it'll likely get a '44 front at least as a stop-gap measure when it comes time to hang a front end under it.

"light weight" race rig? 44s front and rear. TRUSSED. 60s are too heavy to be skying. Unsprung weight is BAD for performance.

Street rig? 44s front/rear, unless I run out of front '44s, then a Dana 30 would be fine, too. I haven't broken a '30 yet.. just a few 44s. :)

Ultimate:

Terra HP 6-'s front and rear, stuffed with nice Dana gears and ARB's.

Realisticaly:

D60 Semi-rear (t-all), shaved w/1-1/2" shafts and probably a spool. Front would be a D44, standard for now, but I'm working on a HP. ARB idealy, but that may have to wait. Probably a Lock-right for now. The HP will most likely get Alloy shafts and "super" joints.

If a start busting the D44 on a regular basis, then the D60 goes in, if I find one for a decent price.

To make tommy happy: for a "light weight" race rig. Strengthend Ford 9"'s front and rear, front a 9"/D44 hybrid. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

44 front, 35 spline semi-floating 60 rear. I currently run 35's (actually they're BFG's, so they're really more like 34's), and haven't had any problems yet with the 44 front.

A 44 can live in the front of a Scout II, but swap to Chery or Ford outers, the Scout II 44's use a Dana 30 outer. If you use the Ford outers you can keep the 5x5.5 pattern and have a much stronger kit.

Keep on promoting them 44's Joe, you haven't found a cheap 60 yet have ya:flipoff2:

Of course I will still be running the 44's until I come up with money for, new front locker, tie-rods, drive-shafts, eight hole wheels, 38" tires, get the dually hubs machined down, or swapped out, different springs, etc.etc.etc...........................Hey I'm with you man, maybe 44's will hold up.

I think I will do a scientific study and see how much abuse regular old scout 44's can take since I have that pair of 60's just sitting there in reserve. Trashing the 44's might be the quickest way for me to get started on the swap.

Gotta make it thru huntin season first:D

44's don't hold up that good. I broke my front locker and both drive lines at the same time and it striped the ring gear and pinion. I also snaped a stub shaft whith a 305 Chevy and 465 dana 300 combo.:( :(

From '74 up the SII D44 uses Dana 44 outers with the big-joint.

Same 27-spline count as the D30 stubs, but bigger joint.

Only problem with the stock Dana 27-spline stubs is you can elongate the holes and shoot U-joint caps out.

I haven't done that since I started welding the U-joint caps to the stub-shaft. :D

What gear ratio?

For axles I'm likeing what I have. 60 front with 35 spline stub shafts and Detroit locker. Those 30 spline stubs didn't hold up all that well.
80 rear with Detroit locker and alloy axle shafts. Currently working on clearancing that thing. Should end up with better clearance then a 60. Good point behind the 80 is the pinion gear is HUGE. I have a 392 with super low gears and 38's.
5:13 gears in both.
This isn't the best setup for everyone but it works for me.:D
