ok, guys, i cut the cruiser in half 2 weeks ago to make way for the 4 link and tube rear. question now is, what wheelbase to shoot for?
I was thinking 108"....
alittle background on my rig,
TBI 350, 700R4, Atlas 4.3, front and rear 60's, 42" TSL's
totally flat skid plate level with the frame rails
leaving the front leaf springs and will have a triangulated rear 4 link with 16" swayaway coilovers.

here is a pic of the cruiser after it was hacked in two.

I would shoot for no less than 112" but I like them long my WB is 125" on Yeller and have no regreats, but I don't compete, just recreation

yeller, what size tire you run.. i am only recreation too..hell, i am 100 miles from any wheeling to speak of:D
I was at 96" and it was way to freakin short for 39.5's and 42's..
i think 125 would be too long for me..

I'm running 44's on rockwells. I just finished a YJ on 42's it's 112" that's about as short as I feel comfortable with 42's. We've done a lot of follow the leader with trucks and the longer ones always go places that the shorter ones don't. Some times the added length makes for some interesting lines when things get tight but when you get on the vertical stuff it kicks a$$.

here are some pics from last weekend of Yeller and some samuri's. Also look around on that site there are some picks of the build up and other action pics that are just fun.

hmmm, well you got me thinking... one day i will probably step up to 44's... so you think no shorter than 112...

any other opinions out there...

I went with 108" on my FJ. I wanted to be longer but felt like 108" is as long as I wanted to go without being too long. Well see how it works out.

my lengthend cj5 was 100" i liked it alot but once i stepped up to 42's i wanted alittle longer. my new rig (unfinished) is right at 105" long but not too long. just my op.

Im at 127" The extra wheel base was needed for the LARGE cooler. I wouldnt go over 115" with out four wheel steer. The small amount wheel base hurts you in manuverability, it REALLY helps in climbs. When was the last time you were awed at the way someone drove around a tree? But climb a steep ledge that nobody else could!!!:D :D

i was wondering about the manuverability issues with the wheel base..good thing is i have ARB's which help alittle...and front and rear line locks... thinking about going full hydro steering too.. or get the lake rat(west texas offroad) to set me up with hydro assist... he only lives about 2 hours away from me..

my 40 is going to be between 115 and 118" on 44s with mog axles and 3 row seating. but it is a trail rig, not a comp rig. i will have cutting brakes f&r so i think i can get it in many places. and make the big ledge stuff to awe the crowd.mike

I'm running rockwells and 44s with a 115" wheelbase. There are times when I wish I had a little less wheelbase so it doesn't drag in the middle as bad. I'm thinking about shortening to 110".

is it me but are 44's starting to look small:rolleyes:
i mean i started out at 37's and now i am at 42's... does it ever stop:p
i am leaning towards the 112" mark... since the rear is a 4 link i can play with it alittle in adjusting the wheelbase in or out ...

Your truck is very cool. Any future plans for it? Not that it needs anything.

I think it must depend on where you wheel cause I can't imagine being happy with 120+ wheel base out here in Johnson Valley! I'm aiming for 100-102, keeping it low, and not too wide. Seems to me woods wheelin' would suck with such a long wheel base as previously mentioned but eastern rock seems to be more open and less winding from what I have seen.

Yeller,

Did you just hang the back tires way out the back on that YJ? Any pics? Is that Danny's YJ by chance?

Really, I thought they were 122? Just changed the Sierra Trek rules last year with late-model Toy extend cabs specifically in mind?

Yes the YJ that we extended was Danny's and it was a combination of the front forwad and the rear back. the rear is cut out but not as big as most. If I remeber right we moved the front forward 5" and the rear back13" we just did an easy shake down last weekend it seemed to work very well.

The only future plans I have for my truck is rear stear, I have the axle and most of the parts its just time and money.

I prefer 105"-110".

Short enough to be maneuverable in the woods, but long enough for stability on climbs.

You saw how mine climbed open front and rear. My wheelbase was 106, it'll be about 2-3 inches longer in about a week.

If it's just for rec, I don't see any reason why 110+ wouldn't be fine. For tighter more technical stuff, go shorter. I don't want to be any longer than 108--we'll see how it ends up.

Whats up with the video?

Yeller,

Did you stick with the leaves on Danny's Jeep or use coils, coilovers, 1/4 ellip.? Thanks.

Triagulated 3 link front and rear with coils. seems to work very well we'll give it a better testing this weekend.

you guys are all stating the WB but not every one is including your tire size which I feel is a major deciding factor in the decision of what lenght to end up at, right?

I'm about to stretch, I've got 37's now and will prob end up at 38.5's. I do both woods and rocks so I was thinking 102ish.

I have a 109" wheelbase Toyota Extra-cab. I shortened the wheelbase down to what seemd like a more reasonable length. I like wheelbases between 100" and 110". I guess it depens on the terrain and the tire size.

Rock Taxi

Yeller Blazer, is that a dent in your rear cage? Did that shorten your wheelbase when that happened? LOL!!!!!!

Still want to slap Turney for that one. :p

Width, which is also important and relevant when discussing stability and such, is at 88" rear and 90" front.

Mine has changed a few times. Originally it came at 100" Since I've changed it to 102", 105", back to 100" and am now at 112.5". Of all the bases, 112.5" is the best. But, longer seems like it would be better :D So I am thinking of going coils in the front and moving the front axle forward 5"-6".

it seems that some of you guys are stretching the front out quite a bit too... whats the benefits of that as opposed to doing all of the stretching in the rear.
my front FJ40 springs are offset so i am wanting to turn them around.. i am already shackle reversed but thinking that switching the springs up front should push the front axle about 2-4 inches...

Well moving the front axle forward will help with your approach angle and moving the rear back will help the departcer angle.

I would also assume the weight would be more centered on the vehicle rather than the typical front heavy issue we generally deal with.

well, after looking at everything closely last night. I think i will have the rear pushed back 12 inches and the front with the switched springs pushed up about 4 inches...
overall that should yield me about a 112 inch WB...seems to be the consensus on the board..
hell, anything is better than 96" with 42's RIGHT>>;)

if you look cloose on that zuk, you will see the radiator about 4" ahead of the hood. they are putting in a 2.0 liter motor and trans and didn't want to mess with moving the t case. plus godzuki likes it with the radiator hanging out there. i think he said it made his sticker thicker.

has anyone pushed the front forward on a TJ/YJ? It seems as if you would have to cut the frame right behind the steering box to push it forward too, assuming that one is not full hydro....
