Are the front and rear D60s out of a 1981 Model 30 1 ton crew cab any good? I'm thinking of buying one and don't want to end up with expensive garbage/lawn ornament. Is the steering axle a closed knucke version? I forgot to check when I went to look at it this morning. From what I've read about the D60s on the internet, I don't think it is....
Thanks,
Grant

the drive train is solid. its the best you can buy from the factory. its probably got a corporate 14 bolt rear not a 60. the 60 front is open knuckle, its a great one to have under any rig. the drive train is the BEST. it definitely won't be a lawn ornament. the axles alone are worth very conservatively 1200 for the pair.

Those axles are total crap. What you need to do is to put them on a pallet and send them to me freight collect only.:)
These are THE axles that you want.

they are good axles, the only complaint I have with the 14 bolt, you can only go down to 5.13 gears.

I went ahead and bought the chevy. I think that I'm going to build it up rather than my travelall. I don't want to ruin the front body on the travelall.
Anway I plan on having the front axle close to stock, like brook's freak, and moving the rear axle as close forward as possible. I'll have minimal storage behind the cab, but will have room for passengers.

If you're going to do this. cut the frame in the middle and move the rear part of the frame up so you have the kicked up part centered on the axle. Or better cut the frame at the back of the cab and 4 link the rear out of tube. :D

I was thinking just that. I plan to go on a few trips with just the stock suspension (moved forward of course!) untill I can recover from $2150 of tires.
Now that I think about it, I haven't ever bought a truck for more than $1500.
