: Header Q's

I've recently installed headers on the stock 72 F engine. They are the 3 into 1 style with 2 sets.

The parts cruiser they came off of had them funneled into a single exhaust and into a standard muffler via a "Y" pipe.

I have also noticed that Man-a-fre's are 6 into 1 pipe as well.

Well unfortunalty I can't run the existing pipe due to my PTO winch (another thread).

So after having others look into it I was told the headers into a single pipe are almost pointless as an upgrade, and the only performance value comes from headers into a dual exhaust.

Considering a muffler shop told me this, I'm sure there was bias (they tried to sell me a custom dual exhaust)

So of you running headers, what is your set up like?

Pros?....Cons? I'm just going to weld up my own (they wanted $$$$) any body have advice and or pitfalls?

Thanx

i have a 6 to 1 header. dont know much bout it..it was on the cruiser when i bought it. so, i have no real comparison to how much power if an it gave. the only thing wrong is when i did s/r i couldnt do the frame mounted pin. its no big deal though.... peace

I have the downey, Specter (+assorted others) 3into2into1 header for my 2F The power I gained from that and a single 2.5" exhaust was beautiful. I see no reason to goto dual on the six banger. It needs a bit of backpressure to give you the torque it so badly wants to put out. Your muffler shop is looking for top end horsepower. Not something you are going to get out of a cruiser.

my setup is simple. header to a single 2.5" pipe with a flowmaster. It sounds great. And I have had a couple of people actually look at me and wonder what exactly is under the hood  (no not because of kneck breaking power, because of the sound at idle)
Oh yeah, dump it out behind the rear tire on the drivers side. If you dump it straight back you will be sucking exhaust fumes...
Which is pretty much why I will probably never put my soft top back on

had the spector complete exhaust with the Kevlar gaskets on mine and loved it. sounded great and with the downey cam made loads of power. right on about the single exhaust, you do need a little back pressure in the system. i didn't use the specter muffler either.....a little too quiet.:D

forgive them father for they know not what they say.

I hope I dont offend anyone but muffler boy is barely one step above part boy, wich is a half step above burgerflipper. these are the same guys that put those reatrded exaust systems on Hondas.:barf:

your F/2F would run like total crap with a dual pipe. your low end would be non existent. With excesivly large pipes and/or dual pipes on a small engine, at lower RPM's the exaust flow is moving too slow.atmospheric preasure finds its way back into the exaust system. You basicly break the siphon of x gas that is helping to suck out the residual ex gases that the piston dosent force out. this contaminates the air fuel mix on the next stroke, thus reducing your systems volumetric energy ( the level of effecientcy your system intakes air/fuel and expells exaust)

The pipe you are describing sounds like Man-a-fre's pipe. It is designed to be ran down into one pipe. Call Man-A-Fre and I am sure one of there mechanics will be glad to give you his $.02

sorry so long :)
