just rebuilt a 305 for a camaro and it isnt running right. timming is on and starts fine. tried to adjust the valves and had to change the map sensor. timmed it the right way and cleared all the codes. what is happening is that at about 1/4 throttle, it starts to boog down and have no power. what am i doing wrong? where do i start to unslove this mistory? not a chevy man might be my first problem but need to get running.
any help would be great. did not know how to phrase this question for a search.
thanks

Is the exhaust clear?

the exhaust is way clear. just tried to adj the valves again and still it boogs down when i give it gas. but at idle it runs smooth with no hesitations.

how are you adjusting the valves? running? how tight are you tightening them? a go drule of thumb is 1/2-3/4 of a turn after 0 lash (after the valves stop clacking).

adjusted valves when engine was warm and running. made them knock then tightened them till the sound was gone then a little farther. still booging.

Did you break the cam in correctly?

the motor came out of another vehicle that was running. the only difference is the year of the block. i think it was an 86 and what it replaced was a 88. i only used the block and not the top end.

well i just found out that the cat was bad. thought that the exhaust was clear but i guess not enough for a faster idle. put a couple of holes in the cat and wala it works. lesson hard learned. only costed me 45$ to figure out with a valve adjustment to boot. now it is gone and the guy that bought it is way happy.

Your cam could have a fawked up dead spot.

have u checked the fire order and all that stuff like the distributor and everythign we jsut had simialar problem it idels fine but ones u hit the gas the motorjsut dies out and we had to lose a full race b/c of it so i would check all the fireing orders if iwere u i would put a new destributor in it u will find if thats the problem or not

well i did what everyone sajested and it was the cat. the new ovner removed the cat and no more problems. firing order was right , distribuitor was fine. had chevy gear head do the valves ,timming and found out that the cat was junk. would idle but when the throttle was applied it would come back through the carb. put some holes in front of the cat and problem went away.
