Had a lot of Jewish(Isreal) friends when I lived in Sac and had to kick a few white power asses that messed with them now and then. One thing I remember about them is they(Jews) were the funniest to do acid with.;)

I'm sorry, but I can not for the life of me understand how you decide to post? Do you read a thread, then drop the reply into a random thread?

Just wondering:flipoff2:

Mazel Tov!

A large portion of the Jewish community of Cuba ended up in Venezuela in the late 1950's and early 1960's.

I know that a sizable portion of the Jabad Lubavich community of South Beach is also of Cuban descent, although I suspect that most of the Cuban Jews were probably more Conservative than Orthodox... is this right?

'JEWBAN' plate A-OK, says DMV

BY JENNIFER MALONEY
jmaloney@herald.com

Gilbert Tabares Gomer will be allowed to proclaim his Cuban and Jewish identity with the JEWBAN license plate on his convertible.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reversed itself Friday and said it will not revoke a personalized license plate bearing the word ''JEWBAN,'' a term that South Florida Cuban Jews commonly use to identify themselves.

The department approved the license plate for Gilbert Tabares Gomer in August. But after receiving a complaint from someone who interpreted the plate as ''ban Jews,'' the DMV asked Tabares Gomer to return it to the agency.

The department changed its ruling again after an El Nuevo Herald article -- which also ran in The Herald -- featured Tabares Gomer, said Robert Sanchez, a DMV spokesman.

The article demonstrated that 'the prevailing interpretation of `Jewban' is not derogatory,'' Sanchez said Friday.

Based on that, the DMV told Tabares Gomer he could keep the license plate.

Sanchez said variants of JEWBAN, such as JEWBAN2 or JUBAN, would be approved by the DMV.

The newspaper article prompted debate and informal polls on local radio stations and a slew of e-mailed comments to The Herald.

''I really object to the increasing senseless loss of freedoms,'' wrote Laura Mintz. 'Would it be less offensive if Mr. TG painted an accent over the `Jew' part of 'Jewban,' or changed the plate to 'Juban' (would the Cubans complain?) or would 'Cubish' be acceptable to all groups except perhaps mathematicians?''

'I know Mr. Tabares' intentions are good, but I do think it could be taken the wrong way easily,'' wrote Debbi Keno, who suggested the spelling be changed to ``Juban.''

Another writer, whose name could not be confirmed, wrote: ``I think this plate is crude and vulgar and anti-Semitic, notwithstanding the religion of the owner. The sooner that this plate is pulled, the better.''

The word ''Jewban'' dates back to the late 1960s, when the Cuban Hebrew Congregation of Miami printed a monthly bulletin titled JEWBAN.

Tabares Gomer bought a black convertible in 2001 after he read an article that used the word ''Jewban,'' and decided to have it printed on his new license plate.

Tabares Gomer, who was born in Cuba, is the son of a Jewish mother and a Catholic father. In Cuba, his mother urged him to conceal his religion by changing his maternal surname to Gómez, which he did while he remained in Cuba, he said.

Tabares Gomer compared his public display of the word ''Jewban'' to a homosexual ``coming out of the closet.''

His associates, who were unaware of his religion until he got the plate, used to crack jokes about Jews, he said.

Florida law allows the DMV to recall any personalized license plate that is ``obscene or otherwise objectionable.''

Acting on the complaint of a driver who interpreted the plate as anti-Semitic, the motor vehicle board that reviews personalized plates determined that ''JEWBAN'' was objectionable.

'Some may interpret the plate as `ban [the] Jews,' '' the Bureau of Titles and Registration wrote in a letter to Tabares Gomer.

The review board didn't know that ''Jewban'' is commonly used by Cuban Jews to identify themselves, Sanchez said, and reversed itself when it learned that practice.

Tabares Gomer, 63, said he was thrilled.

''I am a Jewban. I'm proud to be a Jewban,'' he said.

``Nobody can take away my name.''
