Timber Company Brings Down Tree Sitters

FRESHWATER, Calif. - Climbers hired by a timber company began removing the first of 18 tree sitters perched high in a grove of majestic redwoods, but those who remained in the branches pledged to save the grove.

The removals Monday began four days after a court-imposed deadline ordering the activists down. It was unclear when Pacific Lumber Co. would remove the rest of the sitters.

By 6 p.m. it was clear the removal of all 18 activists could take days. Pacific Lumber spokesman Jim Branham said only two tree sitters, who called themselves "Remedy" and "Wren," were brought down Monday. Climbers were scheduled to return Tuesday.

While she was led away in handcuffs to a waiting sheriff's patrol car, Remedy said her time in the tree — four days short of a year — was not as important as the tree's time on earth.

Remedy yelled "Thank you, we love you," as about a dozen supporters were escorted away from the grove by authorities. Three people were arrested on the ground, officials said.

A 23-year-old sitter who calls herself "Opal" said she would try not to abandon the tree she calls "Anastasia."

"I'm going to the top and doing the best I can to protect her," she said.

Last Wednesday, Pacific Lumber served the sitters with a temporary restraining order giving them 24 hours to comply. The sitters didn't budge, insisting the ecology of the region was at stake.

The activists claim aggressive logging and timber harvesting practices have filled local riverbeds with silt, raising flood levels to new heights and harming residents. Pacific Lumber says it has improved its logging practices over the years and that the activists' claims of environmental damage are without scientific basis.

On Saturday, company officials using bullhorns told the protesters they wouldn't pursue civil cases against them if they agreed to come down from the trees and reveal their real names to authorities. The sitters scoffed at the offer.

"These individuals have put themselves and others at risk through their actions," Pacific Lumber said in a statement released Monday.

I would agree --- that was a fawkin wasted year of her life.

Why send climbers up? Bring the sitters down with a saw!

Exactly.. It wouldn't take days to get them down if you cut the trees down.

would it be illegal to say

"you have been given fair warning. if you do not remove yourself from the tree within the next 15 minutes it will be cut down whether you are in it or not"

and then proceed to cut it down with them in it after the 15 mins were up?

Hell, make a real statement. Pluck 'em out of the trees with a .308. I bet they all come down quick after the first greeny catches one in the ass.

If your going to take them down.

You need more than one chainsaw.

You need the loggers to go in with a chainsaw per tree. Don't give them a chance to get smart by watching one of their own fall first. Cut all those trees down at the same time. And for gawd sakes... don't stop cutting if they start climbing down.

A person can't sit in a tree for almost a year without support. I say erect a 15' chain link fence topped with razor wire around each of the 18 trees. I bet the huggers will be down begging to be let out within a week.

Numba one they are trespassing,

They will get down in a hurry when a saw is stuck in one. If not, drop the tree into another with someone in it. Knock them both out.

Nother thing that be funny is tie them up right where the limbs start, then Top the tree right where the limbs start, good 150-200 feet in the air I guess, never cut redwood. Anyway, when ya top a tree in the air like that, the main pole, trunk, swings around wildly for about 30 minutes or so. Tree hugger wont be able to hold on when ya cut their rope.

Nother funny would be to have a controled burn to remove the under brush, smoke them out :D

I like Adam's idea.... get down on your own now, or you'll be down with our help in a few minutes! Besides this chick "Opal" is a few fries short of a happy meal. She freaking named the tree "Anastasia" and is going to protect her? Dude, it's a tree! She must have been smoking the leaves when she was up there....

Why don't we just stop feeding them? I have no doubt that someone has been supplying her with food for a year. Duh!

Also, it would be fun to girdle the tree at the ground and watch all the branches die and weaken till she falls on her head.
