Am installing a '99 Vortec 5.3L with 4L60E in my '73 FJ 40. Has anyone found a good floor shifter for this tranny? Called Hurst and B&M and they both said that their shifters won't work with the "E" because "it is computer controlled".

what does the shifter have to do w/ the tranny being electric?? something about the nuetral safety lock or something,so you can only start it in park or neutral?...i have a Lokar shifter on my 700R4 and love it...WAY better than ANY B&M or hurst i've ever seen...lokar (http://www.lokar.com)
i almost forgot,,my lokar has a neutral safety switch on it so you can only start in park or neutral

try lokar. i've used their shifters on a few different applications. not sure if they have one that will work. the 4l60e has a mlps (manula lever positioning sensor) on the side of the trans where the shift linkage attaches. that sensor has to be used or the computer has no clue to what gear you want to be in. getting that to work in conjunction with the shift linkage is your only hold-up.
have you thought about running a gm column? my buddy simple simon has one in his fj40 with a 350 tbi and 700 and it works great. only drawback is that if you severely twist up your rig it can cause the linkage to bind up or shift when it's not supposed to.
good luck. georg
Where I work we have Sonoma's with that transmission. The are columnshift that uses a cable to the trans. Seems to me it would be easy to install a column with cable (easier than mechanical linkage like mine)

i don't see the problem. i have a 4L80E from a 99 in my jeep and the lever position sensor does not interfear with the linkage. the electronics don't have anything to do with the actual shift linkage. i have a lokar shifter.

the 4l80e's mlps is a whole different animal, but you're right.
i would run the gm column with the factory cable. no problems due to frame flex and easy to set up.
;)
Thanks for the input about Lokar. It was so positive, I called them today and they eased my mind about using one of their shifters. They even have a LED display so that I can keep track of the gear I'm in. Perfect for my application.

Which length would people recommend on the Lokar Shifter? 23 inch, 16, or 12? I plan to run a 4L60E in a troopy with Bucket seats.
Thanks
Seth
PS. It was great seeing all of you at SnT

since it's a floor mounted application i'd run the longest one possible. i think it's 18"

HI Georg-
Help me out here... Per this site, I think the longest one is 23 inch. Am I reading this wrong? I attached a snapshot and the link.

hey seth.
you're correct! i know i've used the 16" before. i think the 23" is almost too long. since it's longer, it'll also have more throw and might hit the dash or the console/seat at full throw. better sit in the troopie and do some measuring.

I guess I could always buy a longer one and trim to fit..
Thanks for your help.
