Ah, Montreal. You have to love it. No matter what happens the rest of this week, Montrealers have spoken. Before the Canadiens took the ice last night to face the New Jersey Devils, the crowd booed the Star-Spangled Banner.
Coming as it did three days
after the enormous anti-war demonstration downtown and with time ticking down before the unprovoked American-British attack on Iraq, the boos showed that Montrealers, as always, can think for themselves. Let Calgary swallow the swill coming out of Washington, complete with forged evidence and enough lies to sink a battleship - Montreal will go its own way.
(game coverage edited out)
The crowd seemed to sense that, because their finest moment of the night was when they booed the U.S. anthem.
