: AX-5 woes

I am tired of having my weak AX-5 in my 93 YJ with the 2.5L 4 banger. So my question is what can I swap in that will work with my NP231 (I just bought SYE for it and don't want to replace).

you'll probably have to change the input shaft on it. I think its got 21 splines and all the adapters out there need a 23 spline. Something like that anyway. Just about any tranny will work with the right adapters.

any specific problems with the AX5?

it is PLENTY of tranny for the 2.5L

got a 4.1 first and an OD and is pretty strong. TCG Runs on in the factory rock crawler and wins with it.

i plan on keeping my AX5 until IT proves otherwise

My specific problem is that it works great up to 60k but after that shoots craps!

S-10 bellhousing to a SM420 has been done. The only other option for an aftermarket adapter set up is for the NV4500.

What year s-10 bell housing? It bolts right up to the 2.5L? What is the SM420? What kind of durability? Does the sm420 bolt up to the np231 and is the output of the 420 21 spline like my np231?
Is it worth it? Who has done this? What else is there to it?

AX5 is a perfect tranny for a 4 popper. Shoots craps after 60K??????? What the hell are you doing to your tranny??? Currently have 160K on mine, and its never been opened up. The throwout bearing is another story tho, only good for about 70K. Save the adapter cash, and keep the AX5. Now if I could only keep this thing from breakin motor mounts.

I've had to change mine twice plus an exhaust manifold stud. I should have bought a Toyota............................................ ................................................NO T!!!!!!

Let me guess you are talking about the passenger side motor mount. I got the same prob. I am going on my third one. I think I am going to make my own this time though. I too have lost manifold studds. The last one next to the fire wall. I've noticed it on other 4cyls. Whats the deal??

My broken motor mounts have been the driver side but the exhaust manifold stud was the one closest to the firewall. Lots of fun to change.

www.mountainoffroad.com (http://www.mountainoffroad.com) now has YJ motor mounts that you're not goint to bust. Stock height or in a 1" lift. Call 'em and quit wasting your time and money on stock parts.

Well, you could always adapt a set of Currie 4.0L 1" MM's to fit.

Guys, I have a 4 banger too. I'm putting in the new torsional rubber 1" lift motor mounts made for the 4 banger when I get home from work today. Call them.

ok, here it goes with my fixes. First off, the motor mount. I've broken the spacer plate 4 times, the rubber mount 3 times, and the mounting arms off of the block once. all passenger side. fabbed a new spacer plate out of 1/4 inch steel plate. Use TJ 6 cyl rubber mounts, and dont try to get airborn anymore, problem solved so far, lol.
As for the exhaust manifold, i try to check it every trip, and find it loose more often than not, actually dropped one out once, hace a few extras in my oh hell box. keep that sucker tight to keep it from breakin, what a pain to try to ez out.

Well, Let's see since the guy has such a major hard on for the AX-5 and considers it a great tranny I thought he should at least know the exact ratio.
