: scout questions
440scout 11-13-2001, 12:32 AM 1. ive got a 77 sII with a 72 chev d44 front i used the flat top knuckle with the conversion steering arm (for crossover steer obviosly) and the factory chrysler ps pump and stock sII ps box and pittman arm now the pitman arm is about twice the length of the steering arm is there another arm to correct this problem or should i cut mine and just drill another hole ?????(im using chromoly tubing with heim joints for a drag link any way)
2. i just bought a 64?(i think, no title) scout that had a 4cyl will the 4 cyl fly wheel and clutch work on my 75 345 and will the bellhousing bolt right up to the v-8 also do you think this is a worthwhile swap or are the factory components (difs and tranny-t case) to weak for a bone stock 345 the bell housing looks the same thats the only reason i ask
3. do you know what tranny(4 spd) t case (twin stick) and axles (they look pretty feeble) would be in that 64? scout
4. where would i find the vin plate and would it list the year of that early scout???
if youve read this far
thanks
Mechanos 11-13-2001, 05:59 AM Check out a pitman arm from a Wagoneer.... should be about the same length as your new steering arm.

About the 64...If you pop the hood, you will notice that the 345 or any other v-8 will not fit in there unless you rearrange some sheetmetal first. As for the bellhousing to the tranny, I have heard that they will bolt up, but the factory v-8's moved the engine forward along with the tranny...so you might have to relocate the tranny mount. T-case should be a model 18 t-case...keep the gears out of it and put them into a model 20 so you have a centered output. You might be able to use the twin sticks on the 20 also (I dunno, I'm just guessing). The axles should be model 27's front and rear. The VIN plate is on the drivers side firewall near where the steering column pops through. If I recall correctly, it doesn't list the year. YOu have to look at your registration for that.
You ask if that swap is worth it? Yes and no...THe v-8 is worth it, however, you need to plan on swapping out axles, and if you are going to swap axles, you might want to swap in new springs, and so on and so forth...it never ends....;)

The bellhousing won't work because the 4 cyl is rotated. Mounting the 4 cyl bellhousing on the v8 would cause the tranny to rotate. The bellhousing is also shorter for the 4 cyl than fr the v8's. If you were wanting to put the v8 in the 64, you would be better off selling the tranny and bellhousing to somebody with a 4 cyl, and using a scout 2 tranny.

The tranny would be a close ratio T18, and as said earlier a dana 18 T/C and dana 27 axles. The ratio in the axles is probably 4.27 with the 4 spd.
440scout 11-14-2001, 12:01 AM thanks for the info guys that scout came with the 4cyl in the back so i may just put that back or.... the 345 i have is still in the 75 sII so i still have the trans and t case from that scout is this a more feasable swap .... to just use all of this.... or should i just forget it and stay with the 4 cyl???
by the way does anybody need some parts?????
Scout Dude 11-14-2001, 07:29 AM Take the radiator support and bottom crossmember and move them all the way forward and then drop in the v-8...or you could drop in the v-8 where it sits now but you will have to cut and reworked your firewall around it. (I opted for the second route--more work, but better weight dist.)
440scout 11-14-2001, 11:48 PM sounds like too much work ill probably just stay w/my scout II anybody want this project ??? has spring over and includes 1975 scout II with disc brake axles and a running 345 this thing is pretty straight and no rust oh and i got 2 tops for it tooa half and a full top i was thinkin along the lines of $1500 for all of it .....
440scout 11-16-2001, 12:33 AM i found the old registration .. its a 63
and it also comes with this stuff...
another stock front end (complete) ,2 manual steering boxes,2 dodge full size 9 1/4 rear ends ( one with posi) the original 4 cyl and wheels an tires lots of them 13 wheels and 20 tires 235s to 33s and just about everything in between..... oh the rear axle from the parts scout is a factor posi also and you get the stock auto in the parts truck, and it (the 63)has new leaf springs all the way around w/new bushings and ranchos...... somebody buy this before i change my mind (i have WAY too many projects)
Scout Dude 11-16-2001, 07:37 AM I think that most everyone is broke right now bud...:(
Why don't you hold onto it until you get some freetime and then one day, we can meet up and I'll show you how to shoehorn a v-8 into it?
440scout 11-19-2001, 12:14 AM thats the problem.....the projects i have now only need minimal stuff and theyre still taking months to get done and the 6 projects i havent even got to yet just keep getting pushed back so instead of starting another one ill just stay with what i git for now and try to get the yard somewhat cleaned out....
any body need any of these aprts separately??
RustoleumWhite 11-19-2001, 08:43 AM Try to get ahold of Joe (not quite sane). I'm almost positive that he's looking for a 1/2 top......
sounds like you picked up a nice little scout there.... too bad.... I have WAY to many progects myself.... and its the rainy season....... (you know, between Augusts and July here in WA :D)
NotQuiteSane 11-20-2001, 08:12 PM Actually Joe is looking for a scout 80 half cab, windsheild, bulkhead (not as important, can make my own)and either (door) window frames or complete doors w/ hinges.
Joe
440scout 11-21-2001, 11:54 PM well i might sell the half cab top if this guy doesnt buy the whole thing this week as far as the doors and windshield i would rather not part that truck cause its in really good shape but i have another top so parting with the half top should be no problem,by the way how much is it worth???
thanks

Try 78-79 Ford bronco for the pittman arm.;)
440scout 11-26-2001, 11:52 PM ill check that out thanks, hey are they te same spline nd shaft size or will that have to be modified??
Scoutaholic 11-27-2001, 08:47 PM Same size spline and shaft. Should bolt right onto a scout 2 PS box. I'm running just the opposite. Bronco box with scout 2 pittman arm.:)
440scout 11-27-2001, 11:08 PM well do you have the ford pittman still layin around???
well its worth a try...
Scoutaholic 11-28-2001, 05:32 PM I think I might still have one. If I do it is drilled for a 3/4" hiem joint. If I can find it you can have for postage. It won't work with my hydro boost setup so it's just wasting space here.:)
440scout 11-29-2001, 11:12 PM SWEETT!!!! i got 3/4 heims for my draglink anyway...let me know
