Has anyone seen or tried Rockhopper's replacement gear set for the Toy split case? Supposed to be 3.14 low and .96 high.

Do they have a web site? Where did you hear about them? That would be pretty sweet.

Thanks Fe. Got a note back. The TLC set is pricey right now about 2950 AUS, but they also hope to reduce the cost in the next few months.

I suspect I'll end up going with a set since I have a drive shaft length problem and don't want to be too radical in trying to squeeze a doubler or underdrive in.

I put a set of 2.8:1 gears in from Gearmaster about a year ago. I had to slightly grind some of the TC housing to fit them in. With a 3:14 gear set I would think you would need to grind quite a bit off the housing. Does Rockhopper mention this?

The AA Gearmaster gears are from Mark's 4WD in Oz. Since AA is the only authorized distributor, they bend you over on the price. They sell for around $700US down there, almost twice that here. The NP203 crawler box thing is only supposed to take up 10". They are kinda pricey though as well.

I didn't ask about case modifications, but assume that some will have to be done. I'm currently looking for a company in Oz that will source the Rockhopper gear set for a more Oz-like price. Talked to someone in the US and they quoted $2950AU, approximately $1500US. As Fe says, there appears to be a mark-up as AA does with the Marks set.

I received an e-mail saying I could them (the rockhopper gears) for 2700AUD + shipping. This was from an Australian, I think, so that 2950AUD might not be very "marked up". Too bad I'm selling my H55F.

That's a mighty nice offer, bubs. Have you ever done business with www.mannellmotors.com.au?

I wrote to all the AUS dealers listed on Rockhoppers website and only received a reply from this outfit to date. Said that he needed to know the diameter of my idler shaft to see if one of the sets fit my split-case. I understand that there are several split-case TC's. I had the shop that's doing the conversion measure it, an easy task since the TC is in pieces, ready to be attached to my 4L60E. It's a 38mm shaft. I'm waiting now for his response.

I'll let you know if it turns out that he can't send me a set. Bought a wind wing weather seal for the driver's side window three years ago from http://www.motorcare.com.au/ and it was a nightmare with shipping, tariffs, duties, etc. So, I'll only bother you if absolutely necessary. If you need anything from Utah, please don't hesitate to ask.

im thinking about getting me a set, but for like $2700 id give it a miss, especially if i had to grind some of the case, its too much work by that stage for that many $$ but i will inquire as to waht i can get one for, for my idler which i have no idea on the size as yet!

That pic is from MAF's web page under new products. They say it is 1.08:1 high range and 3.01:1 low range. Price, $1395.

Thanks, I'll give Collin a call. This must be a third gear set 'cause it has an underdrive rather than an overdrive high range.

That's right, 1.08/3.05 are their underdrive ratios, 0.92/2.81 are their overdrive ratios. I have a 1.00/3.04 set made for Rob Mullen in my BJ60 in Colorado, made by "an old German machinist" in Vancouver BC.
3.05 X 2.01 (NP203) = 6.13!

Damn, I would rather do the H55F 5 speed and get the same "crawl" than fool with 3.00 in a Toyota transfer case??

Now an H55 + 3.00 + 4.88's and you are getting something!!

i guess i am just to cheap for that. i can do a 203 to 205 for less money and still be a stronger by a long shot. mike

I'm transplanting a 5.3 Vortec with 4L60E. Had to give up the H55 (no adapter available), but kept the split case TC. Checked with someone who had done a doubler with a Chevy engine and 700R and he had to find an extra 7-8" in order to have a rear drive shaft of reasonable length. My first choice would have been a Klune-V, but that would have had the same problem with rear drive shaft length.

What do you mean "no adapter available"? Any 4spd (H42) bellhousing in front is compatible with an H55F! If you tell some of the rocket scientists around you have an H55F they'll freak out. But it "looks" identical to a LATE 4 spd, the kind with the 2.5" cast iron "adapter housing" on the back. This housing holds 5th gear and its' countergear on the H55F.

The H55 wasn't the problem. AA told me that there were no adapters for the '99 5.3L Vortec to any transmission. This may have changed, but 1 1/2 years ago, this was the conventional wisdom. So, I stuck with the 4L60E.

Is the bolt pattern on the generation of GM blocks different from the '55 to recent pattern? IOW are all GM to various bh adapters now obsolete? I wonder if the new ZF S6-650, GM version will bolt to your 5.3?

Actually, I'm just an owner-operator and all the work is being done by DJ's Traction Systems. So, I don't know the answer to your questions. Except: lots of things are changed just a bit and, therefore, even small parts and stuff have been hard to find.
