I am in the process of getting a d44 solid axle from a 79 f-150. It comes hub to hub complete with six inch coils and extended rad arms. what i want to know is what will fit my 91 bronco. I am just getting an idea of what i am going to need to buy and or fab up.

(fab)extended radius arms, shock mounts (mabye) steering geometry.

he used the lift, breaks, shocks, springs, hubs and ring and pinion from the TTB axle and swapped into the solid w/ no prob

breaks were a little too spongy so he got calipers and rotors from the year solid axle and has had no pros yes. let me know if you need any more info and heres some more pics

Here are some pics:

The 78/79 coil buckets are different than late-models, so 6" lifts mean 8" of height using 78/79 springs. You're also going to need a minimum of 6" (preferably 8") to clear the engine crossmember.... even after severely hacking it. Be sure to beef it up afterward so it doesn't tear.

Err... not the coil buckets that give more lift, it's the perch on the axle. :D

Track bar mount seems to be the hardest part... make sure it's twice as beefy as you think it needs to be.

78/79 rad arms can be used, but you might be better off swapping for 78/79 rad brackets as well. The bushing dimensions are different from late-models.

For all the work, I'd leaf spring a 86-97 D60 under there. At least then you're getting something for all that work. :D

sclemons,

great pics of the install, where did you get the steering and track bar from? Also how did you take care of the brake lines going from 2 down to one? Lastly did you get the upper spring buckets from a junk yard or where?

why did you change the upper coil mounts? to just make it a cleaner install?
I thoung the upper mounts were the same, its the lower that were a little different?

Dave, I agree, if you and Mark are going to do this, why not find a D60 esp. considering how hard you wheel LOL

Those are actually the pics of my swap, which will be done "Real Soon Now". Actually, all I have to finish up is the shocks, brakes and driveshaft.

The steering and trackbar came from Performance Unlimited. I'm actually working on the brake lines now, I'm removing the split that's attached to the frame and attaching that to an extended line I got for a 79, then using stock lines on the axle itself. I got the upper buckets when I bought my axle as part of the deal, but you could get those anywhere. JBG sells them, or you can just get them at a yard.

Two reasons - no integrated shock mount (doing my shocks separately, using R9012's) and the 79 mounts are about 1.5" taller.

Once again i would love to go D60 but i am getting the D44 hub to hub complete with the spings and rad arms for 400 bucks, where the D60 would be 2000 to 3000. I think i will stay with the D44. Also i do wheel it pretty hard but i have yet to have many problems with the current TTB D44 besides the axle break which was my fault due to the incorrect install of the ARB.

And also as Mark pointed out to me, D44 axles are a dime a dozen. Really cheap and realy easy to find!

I agree with that. I seriously considered a D60, but they're expensive as heck, and more work to swap in. If I end up breaking a lot of parts, mabye I'll rethink it... but I kinda doubt it.

Man Dave, that IS a great price! I don't blame ya then lol
It's a good thing to hear regarding the Dana44 as all one reads about it seems is Dana 60 upgrades...but gettting them setup is an expensive ordeal for most. Good Luck!
