Hi there,

i am investigating the possibilities of putting Unimog axles into a cj6...

does anybody have them put into another 4x4? --> fotos?

what are the things to watch out?

is it true that they run reverse ? ... or can they be run from a D18 transfer?

weight? (additional weight over a Dana44?)

width?

they do come with lockers... are they air-operated? Like an ARB

thx for helping me out!

There is a thread on the SRC board where there is a lot of discussion of Portal axles, Unimog and others. One problem is they use torsion tubes so you have to modify them to accept a yoke. They spin the right way after the gear reduction hubs. You really need to run them with a fourlink or something the axle wrap would be out of control in a spring over leaf spring setup.

They will all have lockers. Ones out of a 404 will be your normal auto. 406/16 can have air lockers.

why wrap?? leverage reasons. with the wheel centerline about 5-6 inches lower than normal, forces from the wheel turning act with an increased leverage arm. similar to running a 6 inch block with a normal axle. i'd definitely go for a linked type susp. with these......hth brad

If you want some more info go here.
If you have any more questions, post them on that board, as I am there more often.
