I've been looking for a definitive statement of which Fords had these axles...

From www.frankentaco.com (http://www.frankentaco.com)
in http://128.83.80.200/taco/sasfaq.html

Ford spec'd the RR D44 on 77 1/2 thru 79 F-250s and 73 thru 79 1/2 F-150s. The F-250 axles were set up for leaf springs while the F-150 axles were set-up for coils.

RC44 was 77 1/2 in both 3/4 and 1/2 not 73. Pre 77 1/2 were standard cut and yes 3/4 have leafs and 1/2 are coil.

hahahah........how many time has this thread been on here.

Not sure the exact year the RC44 in half tons but it was at least 72 (and I think earlier)...as I have one sittin' on my shop floor from a 72 F100

to get even more interesting, only very specific years had the welded vs. cast radius arm mounts. Can any body guess correctly which years these were?

Umm, I'd like Dana 44 trivia for $500, Alex

Heres what I have found. 77 and down 1/2 ton use the welded mounts. The later models have the cast mounts. If you get a F-250 HP D44 the housing is wider due to the leaf spring mounts but they did have 8 lug disc brakes and flat top knuckles. The only 1/2 ton HP D44 with welded mounts that I have seen have drum brakes.

The last post has a good point that the 3/4 ton have flat top knuckles.

Ford was even worse that Jeep/AMC when it came to playing mix-n-match-the-axle.

About a half-hour's drive from here, in a local junkyard, there's a HPD44 with the cast radius-arm mounts and disc brakes, all factory (I assume). Regular knuckles - I think it's a 5-bolt 1/2-ton, either F150 or Bronco.

I've seen HP D44s pulled from early 70's trucks. Trying to come up with some kind of hard and fast rule on this is a fool's game. But who cares anyway? It's not like it's hard to tell a HP D44 from a LP D44.

1/2 ton:
67/68-early 77 HP 44 weld on c bushing
77-79 HP44 cast bushing
67/68-70 king pin open knuckle

3/4 ton
All LP until 77
D60 LP small axle option till 77
HP60 77+ option
Big hub till 77
small hug 77+

1 ton
LP60 till 77
HP60 77+

Also if you are looking for flat top knuckles you can get them off most FSJ D44

One more odd ball is the F-150 super cab. 5 lug leaf sprung.

Dodge 2500/3500 use a coil D60. But no hubs and rolled splines.
