: D44 - how straight does it need to be??

I picked up a used rear D44 in a trade. I tore everything down and started going through it to make sure it was in good shape. As it turns out the center carrier is sitting about .1" low and to the rear. The alignment is symetrical and everything was wearing OK, but the axle has been wheeled pretty hard from the scars on the tubes and housing. Is this miss-alignment too much?? It has a detroit with 4.56 gears.

My feeling is that it is probably OK and trying to put the housing in a press and straightening it might not be wise. Maybe I should just start always jacking the rear from the center of the axle:)

do the axles slide in/out of the carrier easily when the carrier is installed ?

Yes, no binding or anything even near. The deformation is symetrical on both sides.

That's what I thought, but being a old machinist, I want it within .0001. Maybe I picked the wrong obsession.
