: Damn Good Diff Protection!!!
Boston Mangler 11-13-2001, 03:16 PM Hey All
I just got done installing my "Rons Diff Guard" on the front (rear will be installed soon)
I am VERY impressed with the quality and stoutness of these things and they are much better than the imitations out there. The bars are SOLID and it is THICK
About 1/3 the price of the Avalanche ones and just as if not stronger.
Very Pleased
here is a pic

ExtremeCJ 11-13-2001, 04:06 PM i cannot tell how far that sticks out from the diff but i do not like that stlye at all because it acts like a shovel when wheeling. I ran the 4xDoctor ones one my front 44 and my rear 60 and i removed the front one because it would dig into the ground. I now run the Avalanche one and i am very pleased. It is the best design because it does not interfear with anything. it also has the rock ring built into it to strenghten the housing and guard against them pesky rocks.
66CJdean 11-13-2001, 04:17 PM This one is much cheeper.
Yours is sure purdy though:flipoff2:

Boston Mangler 11-13-2001, 06:05 PM This cover was only $65 and has a 3/8" "Rock Ring" as well. I didnt think of the shoveling effect at the time but i see what your saying now. Hmmm, i shall see.
Thanks

I have That same Style and it Was about free!!
1 Piece 3/8 by 2 inch by 10 inch Flat stock and Torch and Welder!
figure about 8 dollars in Material and welding Wire and gasses!!
oh yeah 12 pack!!
And Much Stronger!!:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:
Adam,.
66CJdean 11-13-2001, 06:38 PM I would say stronger than nothing but his is stronger than are setup because it uses all the bolt holes in the cover so it acts sort of like a housing truss and might help if the diff lands on a rock and with a 30 it is something to think about.

***** Thank You. I stay away from mud and sand so the shovel effect isnt really a factory for me!
:flipoff2:
he he he
ExtremeCJ 11-13-2001, 09:27 PM Hey dean,
From what i can see with yours is that it really is not going to help that much more than you diff cover is. You welded the strip to the diff cover in about 4 places. yes it will be stronger because you have now spread the impact force along the entire cover but you are still connected to the diff cover. You guys also did not get the advantage of haveing the counter sunk bolts like the avalanche guard so you have the chance of shearing off a lower bolt if you get in the shit. :flipoff2:
But like it was said before to each his own.
I had a $160 credit coming from avalanche so i spent it
98DVL 11-13-2001, 09:33 PM $165 seems awful steep.
I think I could live without the price tag...

Same idea, but over $100 cheaper.

ExtremeCJ 11-13-2001, 09:38 PM To bad they do not make it for any real axles:zzz:
BossBuilt 11-13-2001, 10:16 PM I don't know about the rest of you but CJDeans set up is way cheaper...... It would protect the important section of the dif. cover (this part would interfere with the Ring gear if it was hammered)....
As for being atached to the dif cover, it looks like it covers enough serface area to hang in during a severe beating....and I wouldn't worry about recessed bolts.....the bright orange set up reminds me of the Bronco's...:) and has more handles than my Grandma.....
I think if you bang on it hard enough you might be able to yard a couple of those bolts out.....That would suck....
Cj's set up would skid off a rock,....Even a head on on a rock I think it would hold up....(Uhh....unless you floor it) but I think the helmet set-up would really grab the rock and pull the shit out of the 5/16 bolts.....something to think about.
JeepinIan 11-14-2001, 04:58 AM You could always try Metal Fusions diff guards. www.metalfusionfab.com

Holy boat anchor Batman!:D
1TONTJ 11-14-2001, 05:23 AM This has worked good for my friends and I.
D44 diff guard (http://jeep-club.irtech.com/phils_mods/d44diffcover.jpg)
I made that one for my friends D44. Welded it to the HD cover (3/16"). Scrap steel in the garage, and a bit of welding.
Phil
$165 diff covers - hell no, you can build a welder for that much :flipoff2:
Aggro 11-14-2001, 05:49 AM fyi hd diff covers are .125" not .1875" In the first pic up top, what's wrong with the spring?? It appears to be under the axle.
Mangler---you paid about 65 too much....plus you were cheated out of the concept of "makin' your own". See this link-------- http://dreamwater.com/zuk/strongdiff.html

Hey can I get one with a drink holder?:flipoff2: Stupid...stupid, stupid, stupid.....did I mention that it was stupid?
Welby 11-14-2001, 11:28 AM Talk about fugly...
http://www.baertrax.com/pics/bf4sm.jpg
Also, I would think that smackin the front of that....that......thing off of a rock would put an awful lot of leverage on those bolts.
Did it mention it's fugly :barf:
I know form follows function, but dayyyuuuuummmmm :D
mikein 11-14-2001, 02:19 PM Hey Jeepin Ian isnt that the thing
that Hannibal Lecter wears?!!
66CJdean 11-14-2001, 02:53 PM The 2 things I was triing to protect was
1) Keeping the diff from being bashed into the rig gear. Done
2) Keeping the cover from being peeled away and causing a leak. Done
I don't weld the whole thing because it isn't needed and to keep down warping.
I use the FourXDoctor in front and like it just fine. I use it to protect against hidden submerged rocks. The ones on land a can usually avoid. It does trap a little dirt sometimes but I don't see any problem with that.

Chark 11-14-2001, 09:34 PM Hey Dean, your design runs my business!!! Now a few ???'s What rear brake set-up is that in the pic? Also are your spring perches tapped?...I can't see any nuts on them bolts. Later....ain't goin' see a Goalie mask on my Fawkin' diff!:smokin:
Steve N 11-14-2001, 11:39 PM Mine resembles Deans with a anti peal bent & drilled flat stock dealie at the bottom.
Jakesteramalamajama 11-15-2001, 04:29 AM Mine says "OX" on it. :p
borton 11-15-2001, 06:40 AM don't know about you, but if I damage my reverse cover which is like 1/8" or more thick, to the point it won't seal or is hitting the ring gear, I'll get another one and stick it on. personally I'm not going to waste my time making a fawking roll cage for a diff cover. :flipoff2:
I use a 4XD on the front, acts as a ramp to get the pumpkin up over shiat, but what do I know, I'm just a newbie with pinner tires! :D

mtnbikeboy 11-15-2001, 08:49 AM Here's one I liked the look of. It does do the football helmet thing, but also has a chin guard to protect against impacts on the rim.

Check out the rest of this guy's site for more homebuilt bulletproof stuff.
jeeper350 11-15-2001, 09:41 AM I can see most are against the "high dollar" avalanche guards but those are the ones I like and am gonna go with.
It's your rig and your money. The avalanche guard will do the job just fine.
It's nice if you have the ability to fab your own stuff. Some of us don't have the facilities, abilities or tools to do that kind of fabrication work.
