I've done the searches and I come to the conclusion that this is the easiest/cheapest way to go. I have the helms manual for the 99 but I need the computer pins outs from the 96-97. Anyone have these and could shoot me a copy?
Here's some of the other ways to get around VATS and why they aren't the best solution.
I can't get around the VATS by using a resistor b/c I don't have the VATS module from the donar to measure what it is. It would take way to long to try and guess the right value with the computer locking up for 2 min with every wrong attempt and after 3 wrong attempts to goes to 20min. (This is info from DIY_EFI page)
Reprogram it - It just costs $$$ and if anything happens to the computer you get to buy another one and have it reprogrammed again for more $$. Fastchip is 350 with sending it to them. Superchip is over 500 for a custom program and programmer, hmmmmm I wonder if that could be used to program multiple computers?? I might have some more research to do here.......
I like the idea, if possible, of just changing the connector pins outs and using a stock computer that easily/cheaply replaced if problems ever do happen.
If you have a 96-97 chevy Helms manual I could use your help! :)
Mike
P.S this is a 5.7 out of a tahoe and not the newer 5.3 and I'm using the 4L60e tranny too.
